late 91 L300 delica MMC exceed

Hi
Im a newbie to your site from Sydney Australia and very pleased to find you
as my part of the world seems only to have L400 which I personally think are far less attractive
You have all the info Ive been looking for but I could do with some help
Bought the exceed 2 weeks ago and it hadnt been run for 5 months
Got it started but was hard to start,lacks power and blows a lot of white smoke
even when hot.Injectors checked out OK.My question is if the problem is air
in the system how do I purge it

once it's running it will automatically purge air out of the system, however you can also purge it manually by loosening the bolt on the side of the fuel pump and pushing on the plunger on the top of the pump until diesel fuel comes out around that bolt.
If you continue to have the problem though you should consider the possibility that you have an air leak in to the system, most likely from old and worn rubber seals in the injection pump.

In addition to Green's advice, I'd check your timing belt for cracks and see if there is any oil on it, five months is a long time to sit and oil seals can dry out ~ this was something I experienced with the MLB (my van). Then I'd take her out on a motorway and blow the cobwebs out. Then see how she runs.

If it has been sitting, some of the seals indeed will dry. My advice is to add some "engine oil leak stop" to the fuel. I'd heard this advice for injection pump seal leak for quite a while, finally actually did it, and it really helped. Instead of putting it in the crankcase as intended, you put it in the fuel, so is helps the fuel pump and those systems. Might not hurt to also put some into the engine oil to help the valve seals and other systems.

I think our injection pump is now leaking (I have to check this out tomorrow morning but i'm pretty sure because we had it on another Delica). We are however a bit short in cash and I was wondering if adding "some engine oil leak stop" really works for the injection pump.
Erebus, did it work? Anybody else tried?
If it works, how much should I put in the fuel? Does someone has a brand name or something as we are now in Austria and I'm that good in German :)

FYI: it seems that it happened just after puting some "ultimate diesel" (a kind of more expensive diesel that is marketed in some gas stations here) because there was no standard diesel available (and we really needed fuel).

you can fix a leaky pump by running vegetable oil through it. i swear. if you dont no anybody whos got filtered waste vegetable oil, go buy a bucket from a restaurant supply store or big box store. mix it 50/50 with your diesel and run a couple of tanks like that. ive seen it completely fix leaks on two injector pumps.
its possible, however, that because of the sitting that the seals are totally shot. its a cheap fix worth trying before spending $1500 for a new pump...

It helped a lot, going from a puddle under the Deli to just some dripping. I then had the pump rebuilt by CVI, which isn't really an option for you. But there is a rebuild kit that has all the gaskets, etc. A mechanic familiar with Bosch injection pumps should be able to rebuild it with the kit.
Can't find the name of the product I used. Sorry. But any of them should work. And it wouldn't hurt to try the vegetable oil, as long as your weather isn't too cold. I wouldn't use too much when it is near freezing.

Yesterday was -1°C ... and last week 25°C in Vienna. Hence the veg oil might not be on option right now. I'll try to find a fuel add-on - although i have no idea as to what to look for! (... and in german :) )

in 25C a 50-50 mix is fine.. in colder temps, 70-30

Thanks for the answers! I still have a few questions regarding the two options:
1. Usually, a "engine oil leak" product is an add-on to engine oil if I am correct. Would it not be a problem for the engine to put this product in the fuel

? I suppose it is not because you (Erebus I mean) did it but then how much should I put in the fuel tank (you said "some" but what do mean by some?)
2. As for putting veg oil in the tank - I'm a complete newbie on this. Which veg oil do you guys recommend?

any non hydrogenated cooking oil is fine. try to find a bulk price for a bucket or large jug...

Since it is an oil, and diesel fuel is an oil, there is no problem with burning it in the engine. After all, many gas engines with worn piston rings are burning oil all the time. I put one can of the stuff (about 300-500 mL) into a tank of fuel, which is 75L. I did 2 cans at once the second tank full because it was still leaking. No problems, and it greatly helped.
In total I think I used 5 cans, 1 the first fill up, 2 the second, then 1 the third and 1 the fourth.
I'll admit I was nervous at first. I heard about doing this here on the forum, but then a heavy truck mechanic friend confirmed that it works, so I tried it.
