Hi, need some opinions
Changing out my Rotella 0-40 synth for some warmer weather
oil etc. It's been about 5,000 km (mostly highway kms).
I thought I had an oil filter kicking around but I don't.
Tons' of air filters and fuel filters but no oil filters.
I just ordered a 6 pack of Baldwin's however I am looking
at about 1.5 weeks to get them in.
Should or could I simply change the oil, empty the oil
filter and put in fresh oil. When the new filters come in
swap in a new one with fresh oil.

I know some filters are replaced on diesels every 10,000
which makes it every 2nd oil change. Whatcha think?
Get fresh oil in or simply wait and put on some clicks...

I probably average 7500 km between changes , If I have been driving hard long runs I change a bit sooner .

I use the same oil you do, and 40 is 40 so see no need to change in the summer. Run the same stuff in the Merc too.

I'm running anywhere from 5k to 10k depending on schedules that allow taking it in for oil changes, but we are putting on a lot of highway miles. Seems to be working fine. Cams lobes look perfectly clean.

I was planning to continue using the synthetic Shell 5 - 40, but once th eweather warmed I developed an oil dribble from somewhere around the bit that the oil filter screws into. Switched back to 15 - 40 and the dribble vanished

No one has really commented on whether to keep the filter in and change the oil :)

Actually I have developed a small leak as well.
I know it's the front crank shaft collar seal, I don't want to go into
that area at the moment so I figure a thicker oil would help (it wasn't
leaking prior to the change in weather) Later on I will get it fixed.
No funds available at the moment unless it becomes emergency needed
fix.
I picked up some Lucas 15/40 for the summer. What the heck :)
Then I will go back to the 0/40 for the winter again.

changing the oil and not the filter now is better than nothing. There is no harm in doing it.

I worked for several years at a Harley performance parts supplier as a mechanic/parts man, and we finally recommended not putting synthetic oil in the pre-2000 twin-cam engines because it would eventually leak out every seal. We just joked about it and said it was because Harleys weren't used to haveing anything efficient, fast, and clean, in them, or on them!

Change the filter too - ultimately it's cheap insurance

Thats beacause of the older style paper gaskets which don't swell with synthetic. The newer style gaskets don't have that issue as they are a metal style gasket with a foam/rubber/silicone (magic) coating.
