Question for owners of White Delis

I'm gettting some rust 'freckles' on the front of my Delica along the lower metal fascia.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to protect the paint up front other that getting that 3M plastic stuff put on? I don't have easy access to anywhere that does that, and I was thinking of trying to find a roll-on Rhino Liner type stuff to paint this metal panel. The rest of the van looks great - have a small rust bubble on the back under the back window, but it's okay for now.

Thanks guys - I'm just going to treat the rust then paint it with white Tremlad for now - but would eventually like to apply something more premanent/tough.

Steve

I used EZ-Liner on my rear bumper-ski bar, and have started to use it as an undercoat. It comes in a spray can from CT for about 10 bucks. You can lay it on flat or give it a textured looked depending on how you spray it. Comes up lo-lustre to matt finish. 1 can should give that piece 5 or 6 good thick coats

Cheers

Will try to pick it up this weekend - I have lots planned for the deli (brakes, bearings, manual hugs, and paint'n)

Hi
I hear what your saying.
My front end is a bunch of chips and rust specs on the push bars.
I was thinking of changing the pushbars to black actually. I think the extra
contrast would look great. I don't have the patience to use a paint remover
solvent so will give it a general sanding.. maybe buy a steel brush for the
grinder and zip it over.
I have a can of black POR-15 here.. do it all then paint it black with
hmm what were you mentioning at CT? Might be just what the
doctor ordered. Although it doesn't help the white paint on the front
body which is chipped up a bit.

My bars on the front are all black, looks great I think.
They're just starting to bubble/chip a bit, so I'll be tremcladding them black again and try to find white EZ-liner spray.

What is POR-15? Same sort of thing as Tremclad?

Ive only seen it in black. Its actually a spot repair for bed liners. you might be able to use it as an undercoat base , then go over top with a white to match your van

how bad are the freckles? are they bumpy to the touch? If not, instead of painting, you could grab yourself a claybar from the local can tire, wash the deli, rinse it (don't want to leave soap on since it breaks down the clay) but leave it wet, hit that front area with the claybar (since it's white, it's more forgiving, so you can go at it pretty good). afterwards, wax the claybarred portion, or even hand polish first and then wax.

Hope this helps!

Hello fellow "Snobby Basement Nerds" - sorry, couldn't resist

Thanks again for the tips and suggestions - I ended up just trying out the Tremclad paint for now and the bull bars came out wicked I think. I went with flat black for the bars and tried a glossy white for the front.

The flat paints on really nicely, but the gloss goes on really tacky/sticky. I did the glossy just on the licence plate holder, but with it getting all sticky, you end up seeing all your brush marks, so I wouldn't recommend it for a large area, so I just left the rest of the front panel for later.

I think later in the summer I'll pull off the front part, and try to take it in somewhere to get Rhino'd. Anyhow, thanks again for the suggestion, here's a few 'before/after' pics..... ya bunch of Dungeons and Dragon freaks :-D (If someone looks at this post a few weeks from now, they're not going to know what the hell I'm talking about LOL)

Dearest trolls and D&D in the basement addicts alike,
I used tremclad rust paint on the bush guard after having it sand blasted, worked quite well but it seems using something like EZ-liner might have done a better and longer lasting job. I like it much better than the bubbly rusty white now, so badass. . . for the lower metal fascia I just hit it hard with some sand paper, taped it all up and used the same tremclad rust paint. The license plate holder was badly bent due to a run in with a high snowbank so I just used knowledge from a previous post and drilled it out and threw it in the recycling. The new position for the license plate is right in the center out of the way but highly visible, held on with good old zap straps and thin foam so as not to scuff the fabulous paint job. That's the front end until I figure out how to replace it with a railroad tie. Now for the rust found elsewhere.

I used a rust paint on my bull-bars last year, but some rust spots are starting to peak through again, I think I need to try again...

Did you mean railroad track? Or is the Deli going to go formal and wearing a tie?

i sandblasted an old rollbar i had on my old toyota and tremcladded it flat black.
i think the nice looking black lasted one winter in the okanagan, then the rust started to peek through again.
i eventually sandblasted again and repainted with very hard rockguard. never had a rust problem again... at least no rust with the rollbar. the rest of the truck rusted away! ;)
