Need to remove wheels when replacing bearings?

Hey guys,
I finally have some time next week to replace my front outer bearings - from what I can see in the other posts on how to, I don't see why I would need to jack up the vehicle and remove the wheels?

Can I remove the outer hubs and bearings with the wheels on the ground? Or does the weight of the vehicle on the wheels make it impossible to remove the bearings?

With the wheels on the ground, it seems like it would also make it easier to undo those 8mm allen bolts without the wheels spinning on me.

Thanks
Steve

The whole weight of the van rests on its wheel brgs so you definetly need to jack it up to get at them. I would suggest doing all the
front bearings inner and outer. Why put new ones on the outer and leave old ones on the inner? You have to pull the hubs to get the
races out anyway. I just did mine and they were blue from lack of lube and heat build up. Very critical component to the saftey of your ride. Cuidado.

Morning Andy, thanks verry much for the response. I kinda figured the weight on bearings would be an issue. Ah well, only takes a few extra mintes to jack the van, though I think I'll try to remove the allen bolts before jacking.

I don't have access to a press at home, so I figure I'll do the outers, see if that fixes/helps my 'whoopa, whoompa, whoompa' sound that I've had over the past month or two.

Once I get back from vacation in Prince George/Francois Lake, I'll try to pull the discs to get the inners done...

Hey I hate to see anyone throw money away. You should not put the new bearing cones into the old races that is not a good idea.
I am a diesel mechanic (non practicing) from trucks and that is something that no mechanic would ever do. You don't need a press
for the bearing races . A long punch will do with a 1 pound hammer or take the hubs to a local shop and have them install the race's
then you can reassemble it all. Be careful and you may save the seals as well. Also be careful with the adjustment. To tell the truth this
is not a Delica specific thing any shop that does light truck and 4wd stuff can handle this easy. I did it in the street in front of my
casa and I'm not as well equipped as a shop up there. Good luck.

PS Have a good trip up country.

I think I'll quibble with that. Granted, the seals are $50 each, but to do all that work with new bearings and races and then depend on 15 year old seals seems a bad idea to me.

No one has asked, but here are the part numbers and prices (from July 2008) for my '92 Super Exceed L300, done in Calgary

Item / Make & part number / available from / price
front wheel bearing hub oil seal / SKF 22841 / NAPA or Bumper-to-bumper / 48.96 each, 1 needed for each side
front wheel bearing race / NAPA/SKF LM102910 / NAPA / 13.34 each, 2 needed for each side
front wheel bearings / NAPA/SKF LM102949 / NAPA / 29.40 each, 2 needed for each side

Good point but do we know the seals are 15 years old. They could be replacement items from more recent work.
No knowing until they are in your hands to inspect.

Fred,

SKF charged extra for the races?
Every set of wheel bearings I've ever bought , the races have come with the bearing.

They were in separate boxes, so it appears that you have a choice of what you want, races, bearings, or both. They were actually purchased by Kirkham from NAPA, except I think the one that NAPA was out of stock so came from B-to-B. I was surprised at the prices, what I thought would be cheap was expensive, what I thought would be expensive was cheap. Go figure.
