hi
used to be i could drive 120km/h smooth and steady. i dont make it on the hwy much, but recently on the island hwy i noticed when i get to about 90km/h the steering wheel and everything shake or wobble a little bit. hard to say for sure but maybe it comes from the wheel under the drivers seat.

any ideas where to start looking?

Perhaps there is a belt shifting in a tyre? Any noise with the shake?

If you can get the front off the ground,check for sloppy play,
In the tie rods and upper ball joints.

Hiya After Oil,
Check the engine mounts, as the rubber dies, my steering wheel and the whole van really shook. The engine mount is photographed on an old posting. It looks like a large squarish chunk of rubber surrounded by a sturdy metal box, with one side exposed, maybe 3 inches by 4inches wide. A new one has the rubber extending to the top of the lower top edge of the metal box, and old rubber is squished down about an inch below to top -- we were examining these on the "Table of Shame" at CC Autos last weekend, both CC Autos and John Hamilton of Rocky Mountain Imports dot net have them in stock.

i would think with worn engine mounts that the wheel would shake at idle too. but maybe youre right
the tire was recently repaired from a nail hole, ill bring it back to the shop for them to look.

Rotate your tires, and see if that helps. It's amazing what improperly aligned tires can do.

If they completely removed the tire from the rim they should have put the tire back on the rim in the same position. If not, they should have done a re-balance of that tire. I would start with that, it sounds like the most likely culprit.

Absolutely X2 - this is most likely the problem. Even if, and that's a big if, the tire is put back on the rim in the 'same' spot as it came off, it should be re-balanced again. It's just good procedure. Look for a weight on the rim (front or back) - hardly a tire out there will require no balancing weights. Take it back, get them to do it proper.

i got a lifetime warranty on the tires, and ive bought lots of tires from these guys, so they treat me well!

shaking at high speeds, i thought these things were meant to do that!

you may have a bubble some where on the tire. i had shaking when i first bought my deli and checked the tires, didnt see anything...then BOOM and the tire went everywhere.

I agree that sounds like a tire issue.
Out of balance, bad tire, cupping in the lugs, or even something as simple
as mud on the inside of the rim. That can send it for a horrible ride. I always
have to give my rims (on the inside) a hosedown after some mudding,
launching a boat at a crappy or muddy launch etc etc.

yup, the tire was unbalanced! gtot it balanced at no charge. i like kal-tire.
ill know better tomorrow when i drive on the highway. thanks !!
