FACEBOOK APP WARNING
Posted: Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:31 pm
Just a warning to anyone using the Fan checker on Facebook, I have just been sent the following by a good friend who is an authorised Microsoft tech, so as you would imagine he gets a lot of usful information about viruses.
Security Researchers at Anti-Virus firm Sophos have confirmed that the FanCheck Application does infact appear to be doing something malign with users FB Accounts and is responsible for Database problems on the FB Network over the past 48 hours. Users who have allowed the FanCheck Application on their profile are advised to REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY... Read more! To remove it from your FB Profile, click APPLICATIONS in Bottom Left corner, Choose 'Edit Applications', then when all the APPs you have added are shown in a list Remove it with the 'X' to get it off your Profile! Currently if you try to use FanCheck the App says it’s “adding new features and new capacity” which “could take a few days”. In the meanwhile you should become a fan, and they’ll send you an update when things are back online. Don’t do it! All it will do is to infect your FaceBook account sending an email to all your friends who will be infected too.
A few people have reported that the Facebook FanCheck App has changed their email and password for their accounts — nothing confirmed on that for definate as yet, so you’d better take caution when allowing new Apps to install on your Profile!
As an additional precautionary measure if you have used FanCheck you are advised to Delete any Pictures from your Profiles and also De-Tag yourself from any Pictures that have been Generated by it!
An official statement from Facebook regarding the whole issue is due soon!!
Just thought I would let you all know
