Need help to figure out a turbo problem

HEy folks... This summer my Deli has started to pump out more and more black smoke, accompanied with a power loss. REcently its become worse, and I noticed that there is exhaust spewing where the turbo connects to the motor... The soot has built up now, and its become clear where it is leaking. I thought the turbo itself may be seizing, but now I'm wondering if the exhaust is leaking before the turbo, not feeding it enough air, and that is causing the black smoke(lack of air to motor).. This crack must be getting worse hence the degrading power/more smoke. It is especially sluggish the first two minutes after starting the van till it warms up. I am hoping it is just a gasket, but if anyone can advise me on possible problems/warnings etc.... That would be great. I would like to diagnose as best I can right now, so I can order any necessary parts, because the only diesel mechanics are over an hour away.. Thanks for any help......

Hi
That looks like your gasket for your intake/exhaust manifold.
The gasket you get will cover both of them.
I just did mine on sunday with the help of a drunken friend.
You may have read about it on another thread.
I got my gasket from Paul at JDM parts.
The turbo hooks up to the exhaust manifold a little more to the right and
forward. Can't tell if that's leaking or not.
Definitely a problem with the gasket I mentioned though.
(the silver manifold is the intake, the more redish/cast one is the exhaust
manifold)

can't really tell, but it looks like there might be a substantial crack in the exhaust manifold on the side facing the body.

Its either the Manifold cracked or the manidold gasket blowing.More of a consern is the amount of black smoke comeing for the exhaust leak. The leak will not cause it to have that amount of black smoke. The exhaust leak will cause a slight loss of power and some exhaust noise.I take it the van is fully serviced(Belts, filters, oil change, valve clearences, fuel pump timing?) I would trouble shoot the smoke first and then fix the exhaust leak.Remove the drivers seat panel and then remove the rubber intake hose from the front of the turbo to see if the turbo is spinning whilest the engine is running. Also try disconecting the EGR valve and drive around to see if that clears some of the smoke.
It is always hard to try and fix a problem over the internet but i hope that this gives you some help as where to start.

Loki, I think you hit the nail on the head with the exhaust leak prior to the turbo causing this. I'd fix the leak first, because I bet you dollars to those round fried pastries with holes in the middle that it solves most of the problem. Once that's addressed maybe a quick check on your boost levels and some adjustments.

of course there is also another possibility, and that is that a restriction/blockage in the turbo is what has caused the leak/crack in the first place due to excessive back-pressure...
personally I'd recommend tackling the leak, but while in there check anything you can to ensure that the turbo appears to be spinning, and if not, you may need to replace it too.

Thanks folks for the advise. I know its hard to tell from the photos, but it seems obvious where the soot is coming from. I am sure the gasket is no good, and it might explain whythe problem developed over the course of the summer.(ie. the leak in the gasket getting larger) I am hoping nothing is cracked, and that I can replace the gasket and be done with it. Everything I hear, says that the turbo works or it doesn't(ie explodes).... If anyone can link me to a good instructional on the steps to remove everything to replace that gasket, it would be much appreciated. I will try to get the gasket ordered tomorrow so that I can get to it next week. I would like to blank the EGR as well.. Where should I get the kit??? Thanks again everyone.....
