I just bought a 94 pajero 2.8l turbo and before I bought it they said that they rebuilt the fuel pump as it was leaking. The Pajero runs great but I seem to be getting alot more black smoke with light to heavy acceleration than every other Pajero I see. Including the one my co-worker just bought and his motor seems to sound quieter than mine(less of the diesel clacking sound) I took it back to the dealer and they said that its due to the fact that the fuel pump is rebuilt and it will get better when it breaks in............driven 600kms so far
Eneryone that drives behind me says there is alot of smoke but it does not smell bad...
Does this sound right to you??

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
Something sounds a bit fishy here... I can't imagine how a fuel pump would "break in"... it either works or it doesn't, it either leaks or it doesn't...
Lots of black smoke indicates too rich a fuel mixture, you're either getting too much fuel, or too little air. It is quite possible that after they re-built the pump and re-installed it that the pump timing isn't correct, that would account for the smoke... of course there are many other possible explanations as well...

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
Thats what I was afraid of, its seems to run great and lots of power but just smokey power.......starts and idles with no smoke too and averaged 20mpg on the first tank so far better than the 13mpg with my explorer sport trac i used to own.
I would just like to figure this out while I still have my 3 month warranty.
thanks
Joe

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
if it starts and runs great, but still smokes under load then it could simply be the fuel adjustment is out. when adjusting this you have a bit of a balance, more power and more smoke, or less smoke and less power, you need to find the right balance of power, without the james bond smoke screen pissing off anyone behind you.

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
That sounds like a good idea, I'm going to ask them to take another look at it today as I am not Jame Bond and dont like the smoke screen.....although its good for tailgaters! lol
Would high fuel pressure also make the motor louder (claking sound which is pretty loud when its cold )

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
no.
that said, engine noise on a diesel is very subjective, they make more noise than gas engines, however how much is too much is hard to gauge without being there in person. noisy engines can be everything from minor and irrelevant to major and costly, but they are very hard to diagnose without hearing it.

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
If the valves are out of spec then you will have more of a diesel noise for sure. This could also affect the amount of smoke too.
Black smoke contributors:
-Injection pump timing is out
-someone messed with the full load fuel adjustment...increased it
-injectors clogged
-air filter not clean
-valves out of spec
-if you have an EGR valve and it is stuck open then you will see more black smoke. If it is working properly then it should not affect the amount of smoke under load b/c it is closed under load.
If all of these are tuned up then you should see an improvement. If it is none of these then it is time to look at other things. But you really should start here first.

Re: Fuel pump rebuilt/black smoke
Had CVI do a "pajero tune" on my Pajero and they adjusted the injector pressure as it was a little low, and so far it seems to be much better in the soot department, they are great to deal with too..
Thanks for the ideas
