does anyone know of a part # for the l400 ????? or where one could find one, and how difficult it is to put one in.....Cheers....

it has the 4m 40 would it be the same as the pajero, so would they have the same style block heater in them???

There is a block heater available here through Paul @ Pacific JDM Parts. I am currently thinking about putting an inline heater in. There is a unit that has a built in heater/pump that actually keeps the coolant heated and circulating. It is not one of those cheap inlines that most people are accustomed to. It runs around $100 but I think would be well worth it.

I thought someone said that the position that is used to install the block heater on a Paj is inaccessible in an L400 but I could wrong.

well I guess I'm getting an inline one..... hope it works well for out cold (ish) Calgary winter....

CC Auto is installing a block heater for me right now, $40 not including labour. They are putting in a new rad at the same time, so it is hard to tell how much the labour would be,

inline heaters have been proven to be pretty close to useless in Calgary (ask Erebus about his!)
However if someone is managing to put block heaters in these things I think the forum wants details on exactly where on the engine they're doing it, and how to get at the place!

I had planned to install mine this week, didn't work out. Maybe this weekend. I believe it goes in the right rear frost plug, and the cord has to be insulated to protect it from the exhaust. looks like the some of the exhaust has to be removed for installation. I'll let everyone know as soon as I do it. I have to install one on a Mitsubishi Canter on Saturday, if all goes well I'll do the l400 at the same time.

Not this inline heater boys. This one will handle any winter you can throw at it. Diesel fired and built to do the job. Never need electricity no matter how far back in the bush you are or how cold it is. Maintains coolant temp at a constant 180 degrees. Runs off your own diesel tank. Plumbed right into your system. Cheap as borscht to run. How cool is that.
Warning!! These units are expensive, but you cannot get anything better....Period!!!!

Webastos are awesome, but expensive, really well worth it if you live in a cold climate, also makes heating the cabin easier if you sleep in the van.

ok, let me clarify, circulating coolant heaters are awesome, but most inline ones don't circulate (webasto and espar diesel heaters do, and I believe there is a plug-in version available too)

An inline heater, when installed correctly will circulate by convection, but they are not meant to be put inline with your heater hose, and not all engines have a useable coolant port low enough on the block, and high enough on the head. When installed properly, they will put a block heater to shame. (1500watts vs 400 or 650watts) I install many of them on construction equipment that runs in northern manitoba, where the temp is often -50 or colder, and they work great. The beauty of a webasto or espar, is that no hydro is required, the engine is at operating temp.(no warm up required) and you have instant heat inside. There is even a seven day timer available. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
