2.8 Timing chain/guide/tensioner audible sound (youtube)

I made a small video of the typical 'chuff chuff' old steam train sound that is produced when the timing chain/guide/tensioner is not working properly and needs to be replaced.

I can take a better video if need be.

Hope this helps some of those who don't know what to listen for.

Thanks for the posting - great video!

My incoming vehicle has 82K Kms on it, and I'm thinking seriously about getting the chain done as a preventative maintenance thing wihle Mardy has the rocker cover off, radiator/water pump out, etc. From what I've read about it on the UK website, outright chain/tensioner failure and the associated engine self-digestion is often not far behind the chuffing noise, which is a disaster over here with spare 4m40 engines apparently so few and far between.

Is the video from your own vehicle? If so, how many kms are on it, and are you planning to get your chain replaced fairly soon?

Tony.

I'm surprised Mitsubishi hasn't specified a replacment interval for the chain...
Every other vehicle I've seen with a timing chain seem to recommend replacment at about 300,000km.
