Black to ground no problem.

White to dash needs a suggestion.

Red to power needs a suggestion.

What model do you have ? Wiring diagram ?

My assumption would be white to one of the dash cluster lights and red to a 12v switched power source .

Buy a $10 test light. It will make the job easy and safe.

The brand name is "Auto Meter". There is a harness that snaps into the back of the meter comprised of a red,white,black and pyro cable.

Your assumtions are correct. Not sure how to connect the red and white. Or I should say, I don't know how to locate the correct wires.

How does a test light work? Brand name? Canuck Rubber? Link to photo?

Oh, I'm so bad. But yes, get yourself a test light, look for a line that has power after you've turned on your van, put that to the plus (on the meter), hook the ground to ground. Did the meter come with a diagram?

I have this yellow meter thingy with a black and red wire used for several purposes. Would that work???

from what you say, I would wire the red lead to the ignition so that it is on anytime the vehicle is running (you can find a lead for this in the steering column on the back of the ignition switch itself, or I might be tempted to use the lead on the back of the stereo that is live when the vehicle is in accessory mode)
I would then use the white wire to connect to something that is live when the parking lights are on, you can find a lead for this inside the steering column on the back of the headlight stalk, or on the back of the dash pod where the dash lights are. If you're lazy you could probably also short the white wire to the red wire and run both to the back of the stereo, this would mean that your gauge would be illuminated any time the van is running, not just when the headlights are on, but there's nothing overly wrong with that.

Of course this is all just a guess based on what I think you're saying. This assumes that the red wire is power to the unit, and the white wire is to control the backlight, if either of these are for a different purpose, then the wiring choices listed above will be wrong.

Ok white from pyro to the light bulb in the ashtray, works great.

Red from pyro to the fuse on the bottom row fifth from the left. (USE BOTTOM of fuse) Thanks Erubus.

Black to ground (no sweat)

To drill, a right angle drill works best in tight spots. 11/32" bit. 1/8" NPT (national pipe thread). Grease tap to collect fillings. Coat new probe nut with anti-seize compound.

Bit dimensions may vary with pyro purchased.

PS. These should be standard on ALL diesels.
