Hi,

Another question for anyone with an opinion:

What would be more ideal for a long trip? I am planning on taking out the back seats and putting a bed in the back over a false floor (at about the height of the wheel wells for maximum width). We plan on storing bins (like rubermaid containers) under the bed. I figured the high roof would be ideal as it would allow maxium room over the mattress for sitting up and having manouverability. However, I am thinking of also putting a roof rack and box on top, and fear that may be a bit too much height wise.

Has anyone ever put a roof rack and box on the tall roof? Any issues with a long drive/winds/cornering?

I have been considering it might be better to go for the low roof plus roof box for storing kites/boards (planning a kiteboarding/camping trip Baja in the winter).

Any thoughts?

funny enough the roof rack was easy and cheap enough to make out of exhaust pipe. There is a hinged door (the size of the sunroof) in the middle of the rack which allows me to open the sunroof and climb up onto the rack from the interior of the car. That way I do not really need a ladder. I thought that this would be a good theft deterrent. It worked well enough in Mexico as I left my Rocky Mtn bike and everything on the roof everytime I stopped and no thefts. I guess the van is so high up and visible that no one touched my things.

With having both I have noticed to difference with stability in high winds or corning, the a high roof with a monster rack is starting to get way up there though.

I have a low roof, I don't have any problems sleeping on the seats folded down with a full size air bed on top. YOu will be lower than that. A roof rack is extremely valuable for everything. and I mean everything. Just make sure its strapped down, I may have lost a cooler on the I-5 last weekend, although if a guy in a red mustang asks I certainly did not. motorcycle tie downs tricked me I swear. Something shifted and it just came totally loose, theoretically, you know, if that had happened.
