water in fuel light

Does anyone know how the stock water in fuel light sensor works? Doesn't have electricity in the wires to keep the light off or are the wires dead until the sensor detects water and then sends the signal? I just installed a racor 6401N filter on the weekend and my water in fuel light is always on now. Of course I hooked that up and then did some other stuff is it is very possible that I accidentally unplugged on of the connectors so I will check that asap but if that isn't the case I was wondering if the sensor in the racor maybe works opposite the stock one? If so I guess I will have to wire it differently, either straight to the light in the dash or with a rely or something.

thanks

There is a float in the plastic thingy which screws onto the bottom of the fuel filter. It's the thing which has the drain valve. Anyway, if your fuel filter is now what I think it is (I couldn't find a picture of it), then I suspect you've not reconnected the water-float-with-drain-valve thingy and it's dangling around in your engine bay, upside down, which means the float is all the way to the top, which means it thinks its full of water - hence the light on your dash.

Or, if you've disconnected it, and the float interupts the circuit when there is water in the fuel filter, the light comes on your dash.

Or it could be that the Racor filter detects 'backwards' to the stock one, and so your light will go out when you pour a bunch of water into your fuel tank.

Why this filter? It seems excessive for a van.

EDIT: Never mind the last question - I found that you're using it for WVO reasons.

this is what I'm hoping to confirm or not. I should just go out and look to be sure the wires (I put connectors on them and wired it up to the racor sensor) are indeed still connected but it is really late, cold and wet, I will try to get out there tomorrow after work, like I said though I'm hoping to get the info I will need now so I can get to setting things straight if it isn't as simple as a discoed wire :)
