Transmission rebuilt

Hi all,

Not sure what extra value this note provides the forum, but in order for me to get some additional value out of the small fortune I just spent, I thought I’d share it here.

I just got my van back from a transmission and torque convertor rebuild, plus other odds and ends e.g. output seals on T-case and rear main seal. It began to slip badly when shifting, especially b/n 2nd and 3rd, and reverse crapped out one night after a longish drive.

While it was expensive, especially on top of the 900 bucks spent the same week on new tires, the performance difference is impressive. I assumed that the way it previously chugged up hills was just the Delica way. Not necessarily. The shifting is now very precise and sharp and verily she pulls uphill like a sled dog heading for home (ok that's a bit much but you get the idea). I didn’t get a clear explanation or hypothesis on why it failed with only 170k on the drivetrain. I’m told these are well made Asia Warner units common to Toyotas and the like. Lack of maintenance perhaps or too much heat at some point maybe or gremlins. The latter probably.

Could have installed a used one for less but with the risk of same failure(s).

Buddy also commented that my van was a better performer than previous Delicas he’d driven. I dunno about that but could be a benefit of the comparatively high miles and-or the fat, hence more open, muffler out back. Regardless, I puffed my chest out like a proud pappa.

So, not sure whether this is a story of hard luck or good news. A bit of both I guess.
