Help ? Popping sound coming from air filter?

We have a strange popping sound coming from out of our air filter the engine with the lid popped sound good idles good dosent over heat . we have lost some power and the sound is realy loud when i take the cap of the air filter . doses anyone have some insight to what the problem may be .

Have you had the valves adjusted? A misadjusted (too tight) valve can cause that.

I would agree, it sounds like a valve that is out of adjustment. My son just had this problem on his Pajero and adjusted the bad valve which got rid of the popping sound, but it came back again. He found that he had one bad rocker arm on which the roller wasn't turning. It was slowly wearing down which caused the valve to go out of adjustment. Replaced the rocker arm, adjusted the valve and now all's well.

That description confuses me. The air filter drops out the bottom of the housing, so there really isn't a "cap" on it.

But I'll go with the valve adjusting, since those guys seem to know what they are talking about.
