, another fuel/power question.Fixed

O.K I have looked through a WHOLE BUNCH of posts on this and lots of possible answers so...
1- 1992 Delica Exceed, 33,045km. Rad flush, timing belts done fluids changed, Living in Saskatchewan and don't have the finances to visit CVI or CC auto.

No work done recently to motor or fuel system. Van Fell on its face, poor idle, blue/black smoke out exhaust till warmed up.Talked with Firesong and got new filter and water bleed out O-ring from him (THANK-YOU!) Installed and bled air out of filter and still have Black smoke on startup and stumbling idle, but the stumbling idle will clear up.
Power will also be intermittent, Lots of pull one minute then gutless the next.
Fuel filter was original??? Dark green/black in colour with no writing on it at all. Fuel lines held on with banjo clamps.
Timing belt was installed by the shop who imported the Deli for me. The do not specialize in diesels.
-Have many members had problems with degraded fuel lines letting air into system? would this cause intermittent power loss?
-can the Injectors clog then clear, or is this a clogged and thats it kind of situation?
-Once air is in fuel system will it trap at the filter or can it pull through?
Thanks for your time,
Eric

air will eventually pull through, however it sounds like your problem is at the other end of the spectrum, too much air (or not enough fuel) causes white smoke, too much fuel (or too little air) causes black smoke, burning oil causes blue smoke.
things I would recommend checking:
- air filter (clogged/dirty?)
- egr (gummed up?)
- turbo (not spinning properly?)
- valve clearances (too tight?)
As for the intermitent nature of it, there's a lot that can affect this, hard to say for sure, but any of the above in a "marginal" state could do that I suppose.
One thing I have noticed on these vehicles, we operate them very close to the limit of their abilities, as such, any slight decrease from "optimal" is very noticeable, whereas in many vehicles you can loose a lot of power before you notice, on a delica (especially an L300) you will notice the first little drop. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that things that are only a "little" out can make a big difference.

That sounds weird. Something with such few kilometres should: a/ Not be doing that in the first place ~ b/ Not require a new timing belt.
.... Unless it was sitting in Yokohama, or somewhere, for a long time and the seals dried out, in which case a new timing belt might be a good idea.
I think Green is right about the air intake items and the EGR, however I would entertain the injector pump as well. Either from the injector pump or through the injector pump. Could be to do with the way the injector pump is tuned, see if it is leaking as well, I would think that might effect how much diesel goes into the chamber ~ but hey, "I'm a painter, not a mechanic". You might wish to talk with Firesong regarding the IP as he is currently looking into this. One thing I did was get my injectors ultrasonically cleaned and had the seals replaced.
Hear are some links to help (confuse?) you:
I hope this helps you... smiles.

timing belts are 60K I think or 5 years, which ever comes first.

Timing belts are every 60k-90k depending on how the car is dirving motor ect ect. I've seen Audi's roll into the dealership with 110k and the orginal timing belt.... Scary stuff.

I've always heard 80-100K for an L300 after the first one which should be when it arrives from Japan, regardless of Km. Every 80K or 5 years seems wiser, due to the eventual and inevitable rubber belt deterioration.

like I said, not sure of the kms part but their is most certainly a time limit as well, pretty sure 5 years was it.

I've always said 100k or 5 years, whichever comes first. or more specifically, being that these are 15 year old vehicles, if you don't have proof it was changed very recently, do it!

Hi, Eric,
"intermittent" power you say? Have a close look at the timing belt pulley sitting on the crankshaft front end. If it not properly fixed after belt change it may get loose - setting up the timing. As a secondary consequence it damages the crankshaft end. Sometimes "only" the core and the outside piece of the pulley separate from each other with similar side effects.
By the way - what means "red eye question"? (sorry, I'm German).
Greetings from a snowy Munich, Bavaria.

Red eyes from staring at a computer screen for hours trying to find answers before posting a new thread! And may have ended up posting the same topic again anyway!
As for timing belt it was better safe than sorry. Timing belt was "fine", Balancing belt was not so fine and water pump was starting to degrade.
As for mileage... It looks good, no rust, Tires were original and badly weather checked. Might have more than stated but the interior wear is minimal, no scratches by ignition switch or door locks, no fade on seats slight marking by drivers seat belt and lace doilies on every seat and armrest!
I will check the air filter and check for air in the fuel filter after having run it for awhile and post results then.
Thank you all for your input.
Eric
P.S. EGR was blanked off when timing belt was done. Waiting to install a pyro in its place but need the van to be running good before spending $$$ on that mod!

I'm wondering about the injectors
The van was running excellent and then after idling in the cold
for half an hour at low idle developed this problem.
I can't see the air filter all of a sudden doing this.
Unless the timing jumped it should be ok.
Turbo shouldn't do this with the given timeframe.
There isn't any leakage from the IP, I can't see the seals
degrading and plugging all of a sudden from the idling.
I wonder about the injectors.

What is the temperature now? Could you have some gelling of fuel? Do you run power service to prevent this? I would definitely check the crankshaft pulley. If it moves even a small amount it will cause the motor to be out of time.

Tinytoy, here is another link you ought to check out, it's called the "To Do List". It doesn't mean that you must do everything on that list but it will help acquaint you with your van:

Delicat compiled this list. You will find it under "Delica Wiki", which you wil find in the forum index.

Thanks to Eric for the explanation and to Falco for the warm welcome -> hello to the community!
@ Eric: I'm well aware there are lots of possible reasons for power loss in general. But I asked you to consider the possible pulley-problem ("ppp") because it is typical for intermittent power output.
just my two cents ...

Thanks, I have seen this list on the wiki and have done most of the recommendations on it except for IP timing and turbo boost setup. Rephrase a shop has done most of .... I have replaced the battery, fuel filter, checked air filter after a bit of head scratching! Ohh not under seat under van!
As for more in depth searching Ive been a bit afraid of fixing something really good

as I am not a mechanic by trade.
I will see if the timing has skipped or if the crankcase pulley is loose but after that its more than likely going to see someone more competent than I.
