hello all, im new to the board, I have recently been thinking of buying a delica and decided to do some research before i do the big jump into buying one. The two models im lookin at are the L300 and L400 but i was wondering what the pros and cons are of each. Im more partial to the L300 because i like the looks of it more, what kind of options come in each? and on the crystal light roofs do all the sunroofs open or just the one above the driver?? how hard are maintenance and upgrade parts to get?? btw i live in calgary AB

As the general consensus appears to be that I do not know what I'm talking about, and cause more harm than good, I am removing this post so that others are not tricked in to following my ill-advised instructions.

wow thanks for the great reply. i would love to come to a meet one day to check em out, they seem like a very cool versitile vehicle. i like the fact you can go anywhere a truck would go with it, and still take your friends. i noticed the l400 is intercooled, is the l300 intercooled as well? im sure you would be able to get similar power out of the l300 with simple mods like a larger exhaust, intercooler, and intake.

The L300 is not intercooled, some people have added one, however due to the tight spaces involved, it turns in to a relatively major project. the L400 is also 2.8L instead of 2.5L

Was about to post loki's link for a good read.
I have yet to see/drive a Delica or Pajero 2.5 highly modified that comes close to the stock L400 for power.
Larger exh, intercooler, larger turbo/intake, etc.. Has been done and it's not even close.
You have to do some major engine modifications on the 2.5 (L300) to even come close to the hp on the stock L400. The transmission/transfercase/driveshafts/axles/hubs/brakes, pretty much the entire drivetrain on the L400 is beefier/larger than the L300.
Like green said. L300 for outside length to inside space, it's a bit more than the SWB L400.
However you have more seating/cargo options on the L400 because of how all the seats stow away and move around.
There really is no comparison.
The things that lacked on the L300 were improved on the L400.
But looks, cabover driving were apparently not for some reason.
They are based on different platforms so they are really different from each other.
There's both in Calgary. I suggest to try both and then make your decision.
They are both good. Personal preference.
Also left out was the timing chain (L400) vs timing belt (L300).

I as well live in Calgary and love my Delica L 400 .... I'ts my first one and I can give you a lot of reasons to own one and one reason not to (it's a lame one too.... people will stare at you more when your driving one, thats all) Pros well since I'm an avid cyclist dh, road xc etc, rock climber, xc and down hill skier, camping nut, motor cycle trials rider/competitor and the list goes on and on... this thing rocks, all my kit stays warm and dry i can sleep comfortably in the back , drives on the highway like a dream etc....etc.... I'll give another example... over the x mas holidays a very good friend of mine who is a photographer. He and I did a two day photo shoot with all of his photog. gear which is a LOT, I had my trials bike, tool,s gas, my gear and other warm clothes STUFFED into my van and he was amazed. He owns a 2008 ford f 250 with topper and there was NO way all that stuff would have fit. Needles to say he wants one..... I did a year and a half research on these things and with all of the great knowledge here...(thanks green1, jfarsang, erebus, and the list goes on and on... ) I bought one a few months ago.... I am having more fun going slow(ish) than I have driving my turbo, silly 290 hp mazda 323 ... it rocks.... so I suggest if we ever decide to all get together pop by and have a peek at all the crazy delicas....

I used to drive a mercedes 300SD, after cracking the front skirt and tearing the muffler off driving up a forest cut-line to do radio communications for an equestrian event I realized that maybe I really needed something a little more capable off-road... I still bash up the underside of the Delica, but I get places that old benz of mine wouldn't even dream of!
