Wow.... running great

Wheeeeheeew...

Now I know how a Delica L300 can run if it's actually properly tuned... recently took it to CVI for an oilchange.. and at that occasion also did an airfilter change, got the ECU exchanged/rebuilt and a Delica-Tune-up.... I didn't really feel any dramatic difference aside from very smooth and virtually smoke free cold starts until recently... but hey... drove to Kamloops this weekend and back.... and what a difference...

In the past I was struggling to keep up with trucks or tour buses going uphill (the long incline from Kamloops on up Westbound)... and now, doing a comfortable 85km/h's... passing every freakin' big rig (yeeeehhaaaaa 8-) and comfortably maintaining around 100 km/h's on the straights...

The temperature never even came close to 1/3 of the scale... and then on the "home stretch" from Chilliwack on, I couldn't believe what I was doing.... the thing just kept getting faster and faster.... In the interest of maintaining a decent fuel mileage and so as to not out-glow my Turbo-charger, I of course eased off the pedal... but for a little while there I was doing over 130km/h (GPS confirmed) and I could have gone faster had I kept the foot down...

Now the best surprise: Fuel consumption is actually better... despite at times higher speed. I "only" burnt an average of 11 Liters per 100km as opposed to the usual 13 - 14 Liters on previous runs. I also noticed that I can now ease off the pedal a bit (and thus notably - on the gauge - reduce my turbo boost by a PSI or two) going uphill and still maintain adequate speed....

Guys, if you haven't done a deli-tune up and you feel your rig is particularly slow, then I can only highly recommend the procedure...

I don't even want to know how fast the machine would go if I had a larger diameter exhaust pipe on it... frightening :-)

Anyway... the thought of maybe having to upgrade to an L400 after all (as unlikely as it ever occurred to me) has vanished into far distance again!

8-)

Curious. You've had the Deli tune done before?

If so, can the ECU make that much more of a difference?

So I guess this means you are going to keep your deli

No, I had never done a deli-tune before... mind you, after some major problems when I first got it, it received a new head, all new gaskets, new timing belt, water-pump, etc... so I thought that this would be virtually as good as a deli-tune... but I guess it wasn't.... Not sure if the ECU has anything to do with the running performance (as there is no electronics on the engine at all - i.e. injection, fuel/mix ratio, exhaust, timing etc... its all fully mechanic... so I can't see how the ECU would make a difference... the only thing that the ECU has clearly done, is that I have smooth, almost smoke free start-ups and it goes to a smooth idle much quicker than it used to...

I also got the airfilter changed and I thought my turbo was leaking - but Butch concluded that it was just the valve-cover gasket or something... so that spared me a full on turbo-leak fix... and it's not leaking anymore...

I really recommend the Deli-Tune!
