Deltron gets a new tophat

Spent the morning @ Custom Trailer Mfg. in Coombs watching Chris size/mount deltron's new roof basket.
Chris has been welding aluminum for 10 years and makes all Custom's baskets, super friendly guy.
he worked from drawings I gave, except that he modified the wind faring by boxing it in.
and used a prefab piece of aluminum for the corners which adds strength and looks slick.
I'll be adding a home made awning and strapping down a 6'x8" abs pipe as well.
heres another story with the pics to go with it:
deltrons rear hatch doesnt stay up anymore,
here is a solution in lieu of expensive new struts
Chris welded it up out of scrap and threw it in.
Leaving for the summer in 10 days... back out to the shop I go.

Very nice! And a cool and simple solution for droopy door struts.

Wow, that's a nice roof rack! The seams a very clean as well. Looks like a very good place to go for custom fabrication on the island.
Neat detail with the little wind deflector.
What's the price tag?

That's what I expected, but for this quality work it's totally worth it.

Colby, nice hat. In my down the road to-do list is a full scale aluminium rack/deck. I was thinking of using eight towers for weight distribution ~ the idea being having the option of putting table and chairs on the deck and watch the show, &c.. What sort of weight can you get into your basket with six towers? Would you feel comfortable using your basket as an observation deck? It looks pretty skookum!
Cheers!

I wanted to be able to use the rack as a deck for tenting/couching/viewing.
so it was designed with that in mind. the rack itself should hold atleast 600lbs.
its super solid to walk on. I was jumping on it yesterday.
I'm sure 8 towers with this type of rack could easily support more weight than you'd want to drive with.
also the spare tire mount is removable, ie. leaves a completely flat deck.
and inside dimensions are 4'x 8' to make carrying lumber easier.
