I am wondering what is the best set up for doing work under the beast. I see that some use the drive-on mini ramps, some use jacks and wood, or both? I am new to the home mechanic thing and want to have a setup that gives me plenty of room to work but is also as safe as possible.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

It will depend on your surface. Where I live it's soft grave for better drainage. I bought some concrete blocks for Demxx (Local used building supply store). the blocks give 8"s of gain and totally solid for cleaning and wrenchin. For paved surfaces mini ramps sound pretty good!

Just get bigger tires and slide on underneath!

Just my two bits as a mechanic. Concrete blocks are a little sketchy, they don't give you any warning when they fail. Good solid wood blocks, blocked across the grain so they won't split is the next best thing to proper jack stands. And ALWAYS use some secondary blocking.

I can army crawl front to back, pulled off the rear drive shaft without any jacking or ramps... oil changes are also no problem and its nice because its level the whole time.josh wrote:Just get bigger tires and slide on underneath!

for those that can... personally I can't even get my van in to my garage, let alone have room to hoist it!I found an 18,000lbs drive on hoist is the way to go !!!!
for me it's a sloped gravel/mud pad that I park on and some cheap ramps... not the most fun, but it works.
Re: Working under your delica...
Sorry the concrete is 18"x 24"x 8" deep weighing in at 250 lbs. 5 bucks a block, nothing sketchy just solid.

Re: Working under your delica...
Some good tips all around. Thanks. I would sure love the hoist but my wife already thinks my Delica wish list is long enough
.
My neighbour has a Delica and I realized that crawling underneath is an option as adrock mentioned. In mind I was thinking of all the times trying to crawl under my old cars VW rabbit, Toyota Tercel. Not much room to work.
I think I will go with the mini ramps and some wood as my backup.
