Muffler size

Just a couple of things I discovered when I had the muffler changed in Monty. Thought I would share them with the group.

There's either been some advances in mufflers over the past 20 years, or else the Japanese were just generous with the sizing of their mufflers on the SWB Pajeros. The new muffler is about 2/3 the size of the original: not nearly as big around and at least 6"-8" shorter. What that meant was the tailpipe I had (which was in good repair) was too short to be used with the new muffler. Also, the Mitsubishi muffler's output pipe turned upwards, whereas the replacement is straight out.

What that meant for me was (and possibly for others who will need to replace the original in the future), even though I had a good tailpipe the shop still replaced it with new pipe in order to save on costs (it was cheaper and faster to bend and fit a new piece).

The other thing to keep in mind is the second generation SWB Pajero was not sold in the NA market as the Montero (only the 4dr LWB), so sourcing a full exhaust for a Montero and modifying the end to fit the diesel engine is not going to be an option. Lucky for me I only needed the muffler and tailpipe, and not the resonator, flex and downpipe.

Job done at Midas Muffler on Old Island Highway, Colwood BC - 290$. Look for Terry - he's not afraid of RHD. Took my Delica there for brakes, and now my Pajero.

Looks good. Here in AB we have no spot check or emissions test. So when my pipe snapped i just put a side pipe on . Now it rumbles like the big bad dodge diesels. Do you have the pipe and muffler OD or ID size . I might need to put a muffler on due to noise violation.

This is what was installed: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17904/

Looks like the inlet and outlet pipes are 2", which is about what size the original pipe looked like (or maybe 2.25").

Just to clarify, I changed the muffler due to deterioration and not due to a ticket or failed inspection (outlet pipe was rusted away, tailpipe was not intact).
