Hi we have a 92 exceed and are looking at getting a space gear. how does the long wheel base\short wheel base compare to the exceed length? does anyone have any experience with the 6 cyl gas engine? does the deisel space gear have more power than the exceed?

There are a few posts on the forum about the interior of the space gear. The SWB has less interior space than the L300's do, the LWB has the same interior space, and a bit more because the engine hump is missing.

Most people on this forum have the Diesel. The V6's are very popular in Australia because you can get them converted over to natural gas for free, and since the Ozzies can get the vehicles before we do, the tend to snap up the Gassers.

I believe the power is fairly close between the two, as the Diesel is an intercooled Turbo, but I have not seen any actual comparisons.

The 3.0L V6 is not new to the north american market.

It has been used in Mitsubishi Montero's from 1988

There are some issues to make note if you really want a gas Delica.

worn valves, timing and reliability are issues that many Montero owners (myself included) have faced.

Personally, I would not bother with the 3L V6. If you really want a gas motor, then search for a DOHC 3.5L. Fixed previous issues with that motor.

As for the differences between SWB/LWB, there are many threads.

Oops, I missed this one. The space gear engine has oodles more power than the L300's. I used to pass L300's with ease in my 1989 4Runner, and my 1995 Space Gear can blow the doors off of my 4Runner any day.

Thanks very much, diesel it is then! didn't really want gas, was just curious because i had stumbled across one. If the space gear has more power that is fabulous! anyone know of a good one for sale?

Generally, a larger-sized gasoline engine is used to make up power differences for a diesel engine. Gasoline gives faster accelleration at the expense of torque. For example: the 2800cc diesel 4M40 was replaced with a 3000cc gasoline in the Pajeros until mid-90s when it was up-sized to 3500cc (most likely due to consumer demand).

Most North Americans are not familiar with the benefits of diesel and therefore complain of lack of power, poor acceleration, and slower top speeds. All of these complaints can be mitigated with an altered driving style: less foot and more patience.

There are a whole bunch of good ones for sale, in fact, there is even a sales section on this forum. I have a bias, as l like my seller, but I won't pass that bias on to you. :) I suggest you browse the forum a bit, and you will find a huge selection of Space Gears for sale. :)
