Timming Belt Warning

As most of us know, we need to change the timming belt every 100000km. I bought my Delica around 87000km and it had a the belt already replaced. So I did not change it. But yesterday (118000km) the small belt came off for some reason (I guess there are other parts inside that compartment with the timming belts that can cause the belts to break or pop off) and stalled my engine. Now a $700 belt change could be a $2500 engine nightmare. So if you are thinking about changing that timming belt or are not sure the status of yours, get it checked out! I was really trying to be proactive with my Deli, I really love that van, but alas these things happen. Any other timming belt stories?

Lots of timing belt snapping/slipping stories unfortunately.

I cannot stress enough to have the set replaced properly once
you gain ownership unless you are 100% certain it has been replaced locally by a competent Delica-knowledgeable mechanic.

While it's being serviced, putting in a new water pump is a good idea along with thermostat and either a new radiator or recore it.

These two things are very important on the 2.5 4D56T engine.

Ignoring to service them will eventually lead to engine catastrophe as many owners have experienced.

hi, it depends on where you got it. some of them do short cut:
changing only timing belt the cheapest way not all.

In Japan, they usually replace timing belt/tensioner every 100K unless other parts have problem/leaks.

If it was only the small belt that came off and jammed causing the engine to stall you should be ok. You can run without the small belt technically without damage. If the big timing belt did not come off, it should be go to go with new belts and tensioners!

Ah, so one of your drive belts broke! That is a much better situation than having the timing belt go! I usually carry spare drive belts (I don't have spares for my L400 yet).

If you take your L300 to any of the mechanics above, they can also inspect your timing belt and let you know if it is in good condition, however, the timing belt is certainly a case of better safe than sorry! If in doubt, replace it.
