Has anyone removed the their steering wheel? I'm replacing my indicator assembly and was hoping not to purchase a steering wheel puller in order to remove the steering wheel.

Is there any trick to removal that I should be aware of?

You will not need to purchase a steering wheel puller.

Just undo the large center nut fully then place it back on with two half turns, this will stop the steering wheel from taking out your two front teeth. Place one hand on each side of the steering wheel and apply force pulling backwards with a degree of force to the left side and then the right in a fast motion. Move your hands 50% around the steering wheel and repeat the process etc. Once the steering wheel pops free but still held on the shaft by the nut, start (only non air-bag models) the vehicle and move the vehicle either forward or backwards to make sure the steering wheel is 100% or as good as you can get centered. Now turn the vehicle off and remove the nut and the steering wheel is free. When replacing the steering wheel, make sure you place it on the shaft as straight as you can. Replace the nut but only tighten the nut with your fingers. Move the vehicle back and forwards to make sure it is positioned correctly. If not positioned correctly, just remove the steering wheel which will simply slide off the shaft now and move it one position to either the left or right and test again. Once straight, tighten the nut.
It is also a good idea to mark the steering wheel and shaft before removing with a marker as a reference point for when refitting, makes life a lot easier.

Important - if you have a air-bag steering wheel, you must remove the positive lead from the battery before removing the steering wheel and do not reconnect until the steering wheel is back in place otherwise your air-bag warning light will come on and stay on until it is reset and normally this has to be reset by the manufacture.
