Okay so I finally think I am ready to buy a delica. But the ONE thing holding me back is ICBC. I've heard rumours that they are going to outlaw RHD or force you to switch over? What am I looking at for insurance with the devil? I will be paying for my yearly insurance up front, so I would like an idea of what it will cost me for one year with <15 years safe driving, mixed business and pleasure?

Thanks. I will be needing to buy a vehicle within the next week or two so I'd really like to get going on this.

ICBC doesn't like privately imported vehicles because it affects the local automotive industry.

RHD has nothing to do with it. If all of these imports were LHD, they would find something else to gnaw on.

The bulk of privately imported vehicles from Japan are RHD but there are many LHD's as well. ICBC is just targeting RHD because it is the majority.

They have no legs to stand. This has been discussed over the past 5-6 years on these forums extensively.

You can buy your RHD and feel safe about it.

There are JDM parts dealers around Canada so parts are not an issue either.

Insurance is relatively the same as most average north american vehicles for the same year.

I pay $1,200 a year mixed pleasure/biz with full coverage 3M liability/$300 comprehensive and roadstar.

This information I posted, I copied from recent threads that other new members have created asking the same questions.

In the future, a simple search would turn up the answers to your q's.

What are you looking at getting ? L300 or L400 ? :M

Thanks for your answers. I did a little search but didn't come up with anything quickly and I am on my phone at work. ;)

I'm still looking because I also have a tight budget to work with as I am paying cash. It needs to be under $6000.

What needs to be under $6000 ?

cost of the delica
cost of the delica + insurance
cost of the delica + insurance + maintenance

Quite a few owners have bought cheap because they wanted to save. Initially they did, however maintenance brought up all of their investments to over 10k.

Unless the seller is a honest, well known delica.ca member/community, be wary of anything under $7k.

My advice would be to have a competent delica-specific shop take a look at it before you buy. $1-200 for a day permit/shop time is peanuts compared to hidden gremlins.

Good luck and hope you find a cherry one! :M

The cost of the delica. I realize I need to consider cost of insurance, maintenance etc, so that is why my budget is lower. :) Do you know of any delica knowledgeable shops that I could take it to as you suggested? How would I go about getting a day permit etc so that I can take it to a shop to have it looked at? Sorry for all the questions, not to blame it on being a girl, but I am on my own and don't know cars really well, so I don't want to be taken advantage of and this is all information I didn't realize I could even do!

Where are you located and where is the delica you are interested in ?

If I'm available at the time, I can take a look if you like.
