Lighter problem

Hi all,

we're on a trip in South Portugal in our camperized L300 with a lighter problem. It is a pity because i had no time to install a second battery and it is our only energy source! I could use a voltmeter from a local mechanic and test it, it is ok so that's the lighter it self that is broken (a piece inside looks like missing).

Problem is i don't get how to get it out! I have removed the center console (it's a LHD commercial 4x4 L300 but it looks like my old japanese import) and i can remove pretty everything (fan and heater, front light height, etc) except the lighter!

Does someone has a clue about how to do that?

Another question: would it be reasonable to put 2 cables straight on the battery with a 16A fuse and get my juice from here? I don't have so many tools with me and i think to install a second battery on the road would be a bit too much (we are in quite a lost place).

Any suggestion welcome!

Thanks,

STL

BTW, South Portugal is very nice with our L300, ground clearance is perfect for all these dirt tracks.

Unless you want to make it pretty, why bother with the dashboard lighter on the trip? As you said, buy an external 12V plug and connect it straight to the battery with two cables and a fuse.

Do you not have a lighter in the back?

I believe there is a 5amp fuse under the lighter sockets in the cabs, and a 20 or more in the rear.

I bought some cables and a 15A fuse - i'm going to do that (Fuse on the + or the - cable?).

@FalcoColumbarius: that's a commercial van so everything is restricted to the strict minimum.

South Portugal in a Delica does sound super cool!

If you pull the ashtray all the way out, tilting it up and may have to press the catching metal tracks on the trays side down to fully remove it, and reach up towards the lighter; there is a nut thread on the housing that need to be spun off to remove it. It's a little pressed metal nut that hides behind your dash quite well. You need to enlist the help of some smaller hands, I used child labor for our L300's, and with this retaining nut spun off you can easily pull the lighter forward and access the wiring.

This what I remember doing for a Japanese specification L300, and I hope yours is just as easy to repair.

Best Regards,
Kev
