Hey I looked around to see if this has been answered but didn't find anything. I am deciding between a deli and pajero (it all comes down to budget really), and before I decide, I was wondering if there are any known issues for the early 90s pajeros? I did a google search and came up with a little bit of info but I thought I would ask some local owners first. I have one in mind and they are willing to take it into a shop for me to get it looked at, but that may not help with any long term probs that pop up.

Not much different than the Delicas: belts, tires, fluids, etc. One thing which was noted on mine ('94) was the usual sag in the suspension to the left (? I think it was).

Other than that, the thing to remember if you're buying "new" is that it's a 15-yr-old vehicle, so what sort of things would you look for on a vehicle that old from the domestic market?

Cooling system (radiator/thermostat/water pump) and the timing belt/pulleys are the most important 'maintenance' items to look for. If they haven't been done, they should be done.

I've got a '93 Pajero... the engine is the same as in the Delica, correct?
If so, then it's safe to assume that the information (specifically the parts #) from the website you referenced (https://www.socialtext.net:443/delica/i ... red_delica) would be the same for my car?

Depending on 'when' in the 93 your particular Pajero was manufactured, it may be different than the bulk of the Delicas out there. We picked up a 1993 model from Brave Auto that came with the 2.8L (4M40) engine.

You'll find some slight differences like a timing chain instead of a belt (which is a plus, if you ask me) compared to the 2.5L engines, but looking for the same maintenance items is recommended.

We've had our Pajero for nearly 2 full years now. We had some major front end work done not long ago - replaced sway the sway bar link, tie rod ends, wheel alignment related stuff - and just recently we had to replace the alternator. The rotor was cracked and as it began to spin eccentrically, it took out the voltage regulator.

I'd consider the front end parts 'regular wear' items... the alternator has been the only 'surprise' maintenance issue for us.

Mileage was around 140,000km for the front end work. The main problem was that a proper wheel alignment couldn't be done due to seized parts. They could get it 'close' but it wouldn't hold long, so we bit the bullet and just replaced any of the worn/seized parts. Tracks straight and true now. The alternator went at about 155,000km.

According to wikipedia, the engine change for the second generation Pajero took place in July of 1993. So, if you used the Russian VIN decoder (and I can't remember the link for it), it'll tell you the month and year of your potential vehicle.
