Delicans with babies

I got a couple of questions. One of which has to do with baby car-seats. I have an infant one, rear-facing, in the middle of the back bench seat. Works fine. But our baby is now past 9 months and I would like to get her into one of the middle captains chairs. (this may sound like a horrible idea, but I gotta ask) Does anyone think that it would be ok to put in a front facing carseat (toddler seat) in the middle captains chair, and then turn the chair around so that she is still rear-facing? Is this even legal?
Secondly, what modifications have to be done, if any, to put a seat in a captains chair? There seems to be no place to put the one belt that goes down the back of the seat.
And one more thing: First camping trip with the baby is coming up soon. I have spent a lot of time in tents, but never with a baby. Can anyone share some first camping with baby stories so I know what I may be in for? We will have the Delica close by, so we may also sleep in there. We'll see. Anyhow, thanks for reading!

This has got to be a hand crafted set of questions for Delicat.
Also, use the search engine, Bassnailer ~ there are a couple of threads on this that may be of assistance to you.

My daughter is 11months right now and I had similiar thoughts........... 2 things that I came up with.........
1. you need another anchor point for the rear teather strap.
2. when the car seat is in "rear-facing" mode, it sits at a slight incline compared to forward facing, part of the safety of it
three more weeks and she can "legally" start facing forward.
My advice, that I "try" to follow......
it will be brilliant IF: it works, and is legal or do not get caught
or "dumb@ss" if he/she gets hurt, or you get a ticket
Have fun camping in any case!

Delicat's answer...

There's many way to do this, the link above allows you to rotate the car seats and move them forward or backward with the baby seats in place.
A simpler way would be to use the 3points seat belt with a locking plate (kinda looks like a "H", they sell it at Canadian Tire). Works safely but captain chair can't move or swivel.
Cheers

I have a toddler and a baby and slept both in the van and in a tent. Just make sure you do not roll on them if you sleep on their side. Or create an area for their own above your head.
There are discussions somewhere in this site about baby car seats, front facing, rear facing and how to tether them. Use the search button. Also, some vehicles have permanent rear facing seats. The VW Eurovan weekender comes to mind.
Delicat has the answer.
Thanks,
Phil

I have a car seat in and it's no big deal. As for camping though, bring a playpen and dress them in a one piece snowsuit. This isn't just for warmth. Friend of our family went camping with their infant and they slept between sleeping bags. The baby somehow rolled to the side of the tent in the night and suffocated against the side of the tent. It was horrible, they were out in the boonies too and they had to drive out with their deceased child. Keep kids away from tight woven synthetic fabrics!

I got the car seat in. And yeah, it was no big deal. I just followed what Delicat posted and it was easy. Infant seat is now in the captains chair, so that means the bench can some out! Time to build!

First camping trip with my children was this past weekend. Had to take my youngest child for a drive at 4am so she wouldn't ruin the sleep of every man, woman, child and animal in a 3 mile radius. Other than that it was great.

I don't know what to say other than; that is the saddest thing I have ever heard. My heart goes out to your friends.

It was horrible, they were co-workers of my wife so I didn't know them that well. I can't even imagine what that would be like. We take the whole, no crib bumpers, no heavy blankets, no synthetic tight weave fabric toy thing very seriously with our kids after that happened. It's so easy for a baby under 3 months to be smothered.
