Inside the cabin or outside under the rear bumper?
Inside, somebody may have changed the bulbs from white to red (I've done that in my vehicles - red in the map lights, blue elsewhere).
Outside, under the rear bumper could be a rearward fog lamp. It's not for seeing, it's for being seen.
A picture (or better description) of the light(s) in question would be best for further assistance.

Are you reffering to the Red/Orange light in the dome light? It let's you switch back and forth from white to red. The red light allows passengers to see inside at night without disturbing the driver.

Ummm.... You know that a red light doesn't necessarily belong just to the war room on a submarine:

Falco.
