Timing Advice

Anyone have any tricks to setting the timing?
Could low idle leading to stall mean too far advanced?
Even what degree ATDC our L400 should be at?
Some articles say 6 some say 12.
I am on a long journey to get the timing right any tips will likely reduce the process for me.
How about tools to rent, buy or make like the special tool in 4M40 engine manual?
"MH 063302" a dial gauge showing degrees.
