I need a new Rad for L400

Hi Gang: I have a cracked seal on the rad after only having the beast for two months. I have the van at a local mechanic in surrey. Japanoid has quoted $650 for the rad and a week for it to be delivered. Does anyone have a lower price and a quicker response time. My mechanic is checking with CVI in richmond. I also noticed a July posting from Mardy for units at $200. He appears to be away at the moment. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Shakes

Hi Shakes, sorry your deli is unwell.
You might ensure when comparing your price to separate the actual unit price, from the installation price. Some places can recondition your old radiator, but that takes time so you probably want to buy new.
The removal and installation takes some time because other stuff needs to be undone to access the rad to remove it, then all those bits need to be reattached, and then coolant refilled. Also, while you have the rad out, you might consider replacing the rad hoses and thermostat, and water pump, unless you know they were recently replaced.
Did you overheat your engine (did your temperature guage show a high temperature)?
I just spoke to Brianna at CVI in Richmond, 604-247-0500, their price is lower than your other quote, and they install if you wish.
Another great JDM resource is John at RockyMountainImports.net whose website lists parts with the price, he ships via greyhound everywhere.
Regards, Christine.

Hi Christine: Thanks for your reply. I have my mechanic placing a call to CVI for a second quote. The mechanic quoted 3 hours for the withdrawal of the old one and installation of the new one. That's at $95 per hour. I think I will leave it where it is, rather than tow to CVI. The big cloud of steam came when I was fairly close to home. The mechanic can find no damage other than the cracked seal on the rad.
Does anyone know when Mardy gets back from Japan?
Thanks
Shakes

Hi Shakes, Very Glad your engine is OK.
Prices, sometimes better with someone who often does Delica stuff as do it quicker, thus cheaper. CVI hourly rate is $85 but they also have a flat rate for most jobs, they will tell you prices openly on the phone, so you can then easily compare with other shops. Paying non delica mechanic by the hour, you might pay for the education time while he figures out how to remove that awkward bolt etc. Did you check the part price on Rocky Mountain Imports so you can compare, but he probably can't get it to you till Monday.
Mardy is away till end of October, hunting nice vehicles, now in Japan and then in Phillipines. But I know he checks his voice mail and email often, depending on time difference. His shop is closed till he's back, but he can contact his staff here if you need.
Can you drive it slowly and carefully, refilling often, depending on where crack is (you could use just water for short distance). If you like and trust the mechanic you're dealing with, and if you can get the same price as elsewhere, then have him do it.
Christine.

Hi Christine: The entire experience has just got CVI a new customer. CVI has ordered the part for me from Rocky mountain, who will then ship it directly to my mechanic. As my mechanic is open on Saturday and CVI is not, I should have my baby back by the end of business tomorrow. The quality service of Brianna and their quotations have ensured I will deal with CVI in the future.
Thanks
