I had an overheating problem with the truck and we thought it was just the gaskets. But once we took it apart and and cleaned the head, we noticed that there were a few cracks on it.

So I have been contacting people all over the world and so far I have found a complete head with valves and camshaft shipped to Canada for around $950.

But between the truck being out of commission and as of Tuesday night my GT-R not having any electrical power, I am having a very bad car month. Luckily I have a work vehicle to get back and forth to work.

I will post pictures of the head soon.

Most important I guess to figure out the reasons of overheating, just to avoid them with new head...

Hi, sorry to hear about yr engine, yes overheating is a problem with our cute little engines. How did it happen, ensure you solve it before putting another in.

For Pajero's beware there are a couple different models, with different engines, maybe different glow plugs voltages, etc. You must provide the VIN# and as much info as you have to ensure you get the correct one. Send several photos of the engine to the contacts listed below.

Note that there is difference between used vs rebuilt vs new. Used means it was working when it came out of a vehicle that maybe had an accident. Rebuilt means the bad bits are rebored, resleeved, etc to precise measurements so is a higher quality than used. New is new, but new OEM is an actual Mitsubishi engine (I don't think they are easy to find), whereas a new Hyundai is not an OEM Mitsubishi but might be very similar.

Some contact people, these mentioned are reputable and I use them myself.

Rebuild yours: CVI in Richmond will rebuild your existing engine, they rebore etc and replace sleeves etc, to your specs ie A grade is perfect, B grade mostly good, C grade will keep you moving. No, they don't have a rebuilt one on hand. Email to atidiesel@shaw.ca include photos so Butch can judge how badly it is cracked. phone 604-247-0500 but he can't help you without seeing the photos to judge how much it might cost. Then pop it onto greyhound ground service for cheapest delivery rates.

Used: Glen at CC Autos, his dad Graham usually answers the phone and emails so Glen can work on our vehicles. Email ccautos@telus.net. Website ccautos.ca . Has the greatest collection of used parts, many photographed on his website, extremely knowledgeable.

New, not OEM: Stephen at Assiniboine autos in Coquitlam has brand new Hyundi engines, he sometimes has them on hand for immediate purchase. He says they are a replacement engine (made in Korea by Hyundai, for the Hyundai Grace, which is a sister vehicle to ours). He can sell you the top or bottom or both. New OEM: John Hamilton at RockyMountainImports.net (great website by the way, photos and prices). He brings in air freight every 2 weeks from Japan, and each month by ship, he has a shipment just arrived, I dont' know yet what goodies he got this time. John is super knowledgeable on parts and pajero's.

Now for the bad news, I actually phoned around last week trying to find one for an out-of-town Pajero owner who also overheated, very little available.

Mardy of Amazing Autos is in Philiipines until end of October, but does check his email often, Maybe he can source you something there.

Warranties are difficult, as the sellers don't know for sure that your mechanic has installed everything correctly and tightened belts to correct specs etc (yes, check the old posts of KB&2dpgs to see Kathy and Brian's story of what happens when a "expert" mechanic overtightened their belt which left them stranded in Arizona (they trailered it back home)).

Is there a mechanic in Ontario, didn't Wayne of Crushers Luxury Imports move there.

I have decided that I will be going with a new head. I have also decided that I am going to get it from the other side of the world, the UK. From what I have seen so far, I can get a new complete head with valves and cam shipped into Canada for around $1000. I have found about 4 different shops that are around this price point.

Tardis Deli: Thank you for all of your information. I have tried John at Rocky Mountain, he was very helpful and a cool guy, but he only had a bare head and the price was higher than the complete one from the UK. Also I did notice that a lot of heads are being brought in from China. I am waiting for some responses from the guys over in the UK as to where the heads were manufactured. Also I have a good shop here in Kitchener, Sainsan Motors, they do all the work to on my R32 GT-R as well as most RHD and other performance cars in my area.

I have been doing a bunch of research and apparently it's the rad that is the downfall. It gets all blocked up and then the water pump goes and it's just down hill from there.

I have a new water pump, gasket set and new bolts. I am just waiting on the head now.

I will post more once I get some more progress done.

+1 on that. Mardy did a rad flush for us along with the rest of the compliance work that was needed for registration and insurance when we bought the Pajero two years ago. After a year of steady use as our sole daily driver (the wife and I share one vehicle as we work at the same office), the temperature gauge started spiking erratically now and then. Fiddling with the climate controls tended to fix things up, but a day or two later, you'd have to repeat the process.

The next time I took it in for regular maintenance (Fort George Alignment in Prince George has been very patient and accommodating with regards to parts searches and willingness to do some research on their end as well, btw) I had the shop order in a new thermostat and do another thorough flush of the coolant system. They noted a LOT of sludge and particulate coming out.

With the amount of time these vehicles often sit idle, that initial flush may not be enough to completely clear the coolant system of blockages. A second flush within 6 months of taking ownership would be recommended.

I may be in the same boat and ordering a head from same place as you, presumably, from the UK. Decent price for a new complete head.

Do the studs require special tool or just deep socket?

Any other special quirks? Apart from anything normal from stripping an engine...... looking for 4m40 specific.

I will be sure to keep a couple weeks behind you so I can piggyback any issues

Another possibility as to what happened with my head(not confirmed yet), mine blew about 4 days after replacing entire cooling system, wonder if flush blew some chunks, plugged something up made a hot spot....... add it to my list of possibilities........

How hard were you guys pushing your trucks when you first noticed the temps go up? Also, what was the max height of your temp needle reading?

I've only only seen it rise once, and that was going up switchbacks with washboards for a 1000m of elevation on a fairly warm day. It started rising quickly so i just pulled over and let it cool for a few. Dropped almost as fast, gave it a few mins and took off. Im worried the cracked head gremlins may be stocking my near future..

My temps never rose at anytime....... still do not know why my head let go.

My head came apart badly, chunks came off........... short version, it took out my engine(will post more details as I get a chance to strip apart the *f*ed up engine......... Will be having a used engine fitted early next month...... I should be able to claim most expensive Delica in Canada title soon. So much for a decent priced vehicle.......
