License Plate Bolt Size?

I might be missing something here, but I've tried 1/4 inch bolts as well as Metric M6, and both are close enough that I can get them in about 3/4 turn, but neither seem to be the "correct" bolts.
My Delica came without any bolts in either plate holder, and while the M6 bolt will hold, I'd rather have the right one.

I got new bolts @ Lordco. They are 6mm but I think they may be a fine thread.

I've replaced a bolt in the rear, i'm sure it was m6 course, its got a kind of captive nut in the door, try running a tap through it gently to see if it's just rust stopping it.

I went to Rona and got the correct screws. Drilled new holes in the plates and they fit fine. Do I remember what the pitch & size was? Not sure, sorry ~ I will have to get back to you on that one.
When I look at your profile JJ I have no idea what you are driving or where you are located but the Rona I went to is at Park & Tilford in North Van, the guy's name is Dye.
Falco.
