Not saying that chains are not necessary but......I am trying to imagine a situation where one would have to chain a Delica up. We have had ours in snow over the bumper and it just seemed to shrug it off. I would expect that you could climb an ice wall if you chained up all 4 wheels!!! I know some of you take yours into places I would only dream about so I guess having the chains as a backup would be good (along with a good winch).

Chains aren't for the city... You could but it's a bit overkilled.
When you're offroading in the snow you'll soon find your limitation. Good quality chains will blast your way through your previous "limitation". They can also be used in the summer on soft ground.
It's all about traction...
Noel, can you Pm me a quote for 255/85r16?
Thanks,
Mr. D

Zig-zag pattern is way more comfortable that the straight across pattern, imho.

Those offered for sale are called ladder chains - very nice ladder chains in fact. With ladder chains, tires will make contact with the road intermittently - hence the noise and the bumpy ride. A tried and true design, and the most common.
Ladder chains are generally not recommended for vehicles with ABS or traction control systems; I think that diamond or zig-zag is a better choice for those. Based only on what I've read about the drivetrain, I'd assume that you can set the transmission to 4WD (not AWD) and the L400 & Pajero's would be fine.
There are also diamond, cable, and link styles; and custom patterns too. Diamond are what I am most familiar with. See below for some idea of the variety.

Zig-zag chains maintain contact with the road throughout the tire's revolution, and are generally said to be best overall. Here's a photo of zig-zag.

There is also the matter of regulation. I'm not sure what the rules are in Canada and whether the chains I've described, or those for sale, meet regulations. I've seen them all in use back east.
