Overdrive Problem

Hey Folks,

I have problem with my Overdrive and it's strange because the switch works fine!

- Switch works fine
- OD light in dash indicate the right thing
- OD was working fine until one morning!

So basically it's not a switch problem and little has been posted on actual tranny problem toward Overdrive!

Glenn at CC auto was telling me about some temperature sensor on Engine that allows the tranny to go in OD!

Any clue?

Thanks
Antoine

Have you checked the level of your Automatic Transmission Fluid? The engine should be running with the vehicle in "Park", on level ground when you check it. The ATF should be pink. If it is brown ~ it's time to change it (& flush it). If the ATF is low then that could cause your tranny not to go into higher gears. Start with the simple stuff before you rebuild your transmission.

Falco.

When posting a troubleshooting request you have to be be more specific and detailed about the symptoms and the exact equipment behavior. Otherwise you will get a bunch of useless recommendations and guesses and more questions arise later. :M
The temperature sensor you mentioned (#2 on the picture) in conjunction with the tranny ECU is responsible for the 4th gear but the tranny temperature is not the only factor affecting the shifting pattern.

Hello folks

I took for granted something important! I have a L400!

To answer your thought Profister, chronologicaly this is what happened:

1. Bought my van
2. Drove 6000km
3. Parked the van one night
4. Took the van couple days later
5. OD wasn't working

So I'll check those temparature sensor for the L400 and if it's works I'll be happy

Falco, I've check ATF and it's not bad still pinkish but as so darkness in it. On the dip stick there's 3 nodge, it's at the middle one!

Dear Mr. Pistachio, 'OD wasn't working' is not the detailed description of the problem; you will go nowhere with it.

Well I'll be able to go somewhere but not at the desired speed!

Seriously, detail wise I can tell you color of my truck and size of my tires but the facts are: one day, transmission was going trought all five speed properly and the other day transmission wasn't going into overdrive. Only detail that could be any relevant is that it was during the cold night (-10). Otherwise dash light is working, shifter button's working. The truck's in very good working condition. There's no direct effect like: I drove into a wall and the engine wouldn't start anymore!

Trust me I would like to give you more detail but right now the problem I have is the lack of details and the fact I can't work with somekind of idea of the problem!

The reason I've posted I to find some input, ideas, people that would of have similar problems!

Cheers
Antoine

Mr P
Anything else not working?? For example: If the L300 won't shift into OD, the tach doesn't work and signal lights don't work, a fuse is the fault.

Long shot... but there is stilll a lot we don't know about the L400s.

Let us know the solution and we are all better off.

2 position system on/off........ switch and light working...... not much left to elaborate on...... might just be my ESP that filled in the gaps........ J/K

seriously though.... here are some links from the UK that cover some of the basic stuff (sensor already mentioned), how to test and such before you start to talk big $$$

Had this happen to me once on my 1994 about a couple months ago, cycled(to eleborate: pushed the little button on the end of the big stick off the steering column twice :-P ) the O/D switch and it worked just fine after that. Curious to see what you cause is, mine may turn out to be a precursor to a failure.

I had this problem and was probably the one who first mentioned it to Glen at CC. I simply bypassed the heat sensor with a wire to ground on the engine and it works fine.

I click off the O/D button until the engine temp is up to speed and then click O/D back on. Still haven't got around to getting a new temp sensor, but with O/D working I'm not in a hurry (remember to take off O/D until the engine is warm.

The guys at CC were not convinced and suggested I remove the wire at some time and see what happens. Did it and had O/D problems within 10 minutes on the highway.

This link was pretty useful and the solution (short term that is) was dead simple.

Hope this helps,

dj

Hey All,

Checked the sensor Profister, Djelica and Gleen at CC auto talked about and indeed there was a sensor unplugged. I've fix it and waiting for the day at work to be done to go out for a drive!

It actually look just like that: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95 ... CT0204.jpg

I'll keep posted on if it worked out well!

Thank ya'll for your help!

It works! So the censor was indeed the problem!

Another thing to remember for L400

Weird. My 2006 L400 (diesel) does not have the sensor pictured above as sensor #2. There's not even a hole for it. When I was having OD issues, the sensor that appears to have been causing the problem (corroded...connected needed cleaning) was the coolant sensor shown as #1 in the above picture. The OD was dropping out randomly at highway speed. The sensor terminal is non-weather-protected and prone to corroding.

#1 you are referring to has nothing to do with coolant or the TPS. It's the sending unit for the oil warning light.

Weird, fidling with the sensor seemed to help. Ok, where is my OD coolant temp sensor then? Sensor #2 does not exist on my deli. There is a combo sensor in front of the injectors, one terminal goes to the glow controller and the other goes to the temp gauge on the dash. Unplugging this has no effect on the OD. Do 1996 delis not have an OD temp sensor, or is it hidden somewhere else?
