Wonder if some one might know what is making this noise. Upon acceleration, say up a hill, the L400 will kick down a gear and a loud, high pitched fan/air noise comes on. seems to be coming from mid dash engine compartment. Letting up on the gas pedal shuts off problem.. No notice or change in engine performance when issue occurs. I am suspecting may be related to turbo, though not sure. L400 Royal Exceed 1994, auto.
thanks

I think it is your actuator from the turbo.

The loud hissing sound Pssssssssssssst ! Is the release valve on the rear of the intake manifold.
One of two things
Wastegate actuator is sticking / lubricate it to fix.
Pressure release valve on the intake is opening due to too much pressure/boost . Check to see if there are any washers in between the wastegate and the turbo housing. This raises the boost psi and if it's too high, the release valve will spring open when there is too much pressure.
