Swap to 4D56? (from 4G64)

Post by Yokohama »

Is the 4D56 a wide block? Will it swap in place of the 4G64 wide block without too many issues (automatic transmission)? Of course, the fuel system, etc. would need to be changed.

Thank you.

Don't even try. Everything else has to move also, and no places on frame to mount moved things to ie now where will you bolt the tranny to the frame. Different frames for different models. Christine.

Plan on a complete diesel Delica as a donor for all the bits and pieces you're going to need. The pictures in the Russek manual suggest that the front suspension and subframe are different. This makes sense, since the diesel engine is a lot heavier than the gas engine.

I wouldn't bother. I'd sell the gasser and buy a diesel.

Talk to Glenn at Coombs Country Auto - he's had this done and it was a BIG job. Such a big job the person he was doing it for backed out of it.

The frame is different to accommodate the differences in engine shape/mounting, as is the engine bay, as is the suspension mounts.

A simpler change-out might be from a 4G64 to a larger gasoline engine or a more recent model. It might fit better, and there may possibly be less to modify.

Either way, there would be a lot of unique modifications (read: custom work). Not sure why you'd want to do this, and I'll admit I wouldn't know how to do it, but I can say it would cost you a lot of money (unless you did all the labour yourself).

What's the prob with your 4G64. It's a good engine, I have one. I'd like to install the more modern 16 valve head for improved performance but I'm happy with the engine.
I echo the others comments about the nightmare the engine change would be.

I would switch to the 16V head (SOHC) head that came on several 4G64 engine equipped Mitsubishi, except I am not certain that there would be much if any real fuel economy gains.

If fuel economy is your issue, try the 4G63T: it's smaller, is turbo-powered, but might give you a similar response to the larger 4G64. It'd probably fit better than the diesel engine, too.

Yes, it had also occurred to me to downsize the engine. The easiest to get would be the G63B from the 80's Mighty Max truck (wideblock, 6 bolt, automatic). Then maybe use a 16V SOHC head; I want to be able to bolt my stock manifolds up the new head. Although, I don't know if the 16V heads would accept the 8V head manifolds.

Still, I wonder since the G63B would have to turn faster to maintain a given speed over the 4G64 then I would not get any real gains.

From my experience smaller engines tend to drop gears more, thereby using more fuel overall, even though they are a smaller displacement engine.

I thought Glenn went from Gas LHD, 2wd, to Diesel 4X4 which would be different then just swapping motors. Still easier to buy a diesel.

I have done lots of swaps from motors that came in things to motors that never came in things. They cost more then you estimate, take longer then you think, and in the end if you do it right are AWESOME!!!

Smaller motor pushing a heavy truck would get worse mileage! I bet a fuel injected V8 from a newer truck would get better mileage as with the right gears it would be running just off idle. I vote V8 do I get a vote?

Cheers

I put a 16V head on a 4G64 in a Ram 50. It made ridiculous power. So much so that I blew the clutch out in about a week. It's not an easy swap. as a the head is set up for FWD, and a lot of things try to exit the engine into the firewall, but the results are pretty impressive.
