In the US, you may find those engines at some wreckers if you can get to them.

Dodge RAM D50 pickup trucks 1979-1989

They came with the 4D55 which you can use in the Delica's 4D56T place.

hey guys and gals in delica land!
ive been movin around a bunch again and havent had a chance to post. we found the beach i heard about using google earth. its called playa canelan and its near monteon, not far from sayulita. it was so freakin awesome to find a beach with zero development save for a few palapas. i finally got a chance to drive on the sand. i lowered the tire pressure to 20 and hit the sand. we went down the beach about half a mile with no problems. it was great to camp on a desolate beach and see almost no people.

we took a guided boat trip to a spring to swim in and also went to the corocrilario. crocodile sanctuary

Image Image Hosting

i got another chance for some real 4x4 on the way to a remote waterfall called el cora

Image Image Hosting

it was really nice to swim in fresh water and sit in little waterfalls down the river from this big one.
before leaving san blas we checked out iglesia nuestra senora de rosario. an old ruined church on the mountain that overlooks san blas

Image Image Hosting
then we went to tepic for an afternoon of shopping for huichol handicrafts. we camped a night at laguna santa maria del oro, a crater lake. the lake was a filthy green, not an azure blue like the books say, and the campground not that great so we left for guadlajara in the morning, stopping at the way at a volcano, volcan cerobuco. it was a long windy 20km cobblestone road to the top. we passed a bunch of agave farms on the way up, they make tequila from the agave.
Image Image Hosting parked inside the volcano

were in guadalajara now. i got the van in a safe parking lot and the attendant promised to wash it. its really really dirty! its also covered in salt from the sea spray at canelan.

the centrifuge fell out the back one time after i slightly backed into a tree! thankfully the only damage to the van was a reflector scraped off, the one you need to pass inspection. but when the 'fuge fell out the motor separated from the housing thus rendering the already too short screws useless. i dont really take the time to stop long enough to clean oil now, and its kinda hard to get large amount of. so i guess ill not be traveling back with too much WVO

were gona start heading back north here pretty soon.

paz!

Awesome trip, Oil! You are going to have to tie your centrifuge down a little better, but still ~ you are out there doing it! I just finished washing the salt off, too ~ but it wasn't because of driving on a beautiful beach :-( . Those are pretty nice pictures you are taking, they really spark the imagination. Will you be putting together a gallery when you get home?

Falco.

hey everybody!
im sorry but ive been a bit lazy on the posting front..
since we left the coast its been mostly cities.. churches and museums.. not alot to post about i guess...

since my last post we spent 2 nights in guadalajara...a big but nice city. i got the van washed for $5... even cleaner than when it came from japan.. we should get this guy up to clean the vans before the ag inspection!

after guadalajara was aguascalientes, we went to the national museum of the dead. i met some mexican rastas, ones a tattoo artist..

then on to real de catorce.. probably my favorite place in all of mexico!!! its a tiny villiiage at 9500 feet in the sierra madres. the spanish started to settle there in 1650 and found silver so it became an important mining town. more importantly.. the huichol have been making a pilgrimage there sine time immemorial, collecting peyote on the way on the desert floor and climbing to mount quemada to give thanks. we went horseback riding the first day to quemada, the 2nd day to the desert floor and then horseback riding again to some spanish ruins. the town has real character and i would love to go back there...

after real de catorce we went for a night to saltillo and sunday morning we crossed the us border into laredo. the border gaurds were more interested in the van itself then the contents or the status of the drivers!

monday we went to the alamo.. boooooring! i grew up in texas and used to think it was a big deal, but i outgrew that whole nationalism thing a long time ago. we spent the night in austin with an old friend from high school.

we are now at my moms in fort worth texas.. im trying to get the 'fuge in order and gonna collect some wvo here pretty soon. i got plans to visit old friends and whatnot so ill be pretty busy while im here.

a picture says 1000 words, so go check the flickr sire for all the great photos of the trip since my last posts...

you must get insurance for your car in mexico. you can get it at offices in most towns at the border. but if youre unlucky like we were youll not find an insurance office in the town you are in. better get it on the net. just google mexican auto insurance.
we paid about $300 for fukl coverage for 6 mos. cheaper for 6 mos then less than 6 mos

i wanted to show y'all this road. this is the reason everybody in real de catorce was so intersted in our delica. the road is too windy for full size pickups. the only vehicles they use there on this road are willy's jeeps from the 50's

heres one of their willy's

we left fort worth yesterday after a week of home cooking with my mom and catching up with old friends.every time i go to fort worth, i reconfirm that i did the right thing when i left there 18 years ago!
we headed west on I20.
nothing... thats whats out there in west texas. about 100 miles from midland we could see a huge cloud of sand. when we got there we drove into the sandstorm. the visibility was about 100 feet, the wind was comin' at us at 80kph.. we werent making much headway thats for sure.
we spent the night at motel 6 in pecos texas, nothing there either.
today we drove from pecos, through van horn and el paso. we are listening to no country for old men on CD. the whole story takes place in the desert not far south of where we were, that was kinds neat.
we drove through an illegal us border patrol checkpoint on I25 north of las cruces.. that shit never fails to piss me off. as usual, the man was more interested in the delica than its passengers or content!
we are spending the night with my wife's aunts, uncle and grandfather who moved a few years ago to truth or consequences new mexico.. named after the game show!
tomorrow im going to meet a guy in town whos got some WVO!

Wow, quite the sand storm. Have you checked your air filter? I would be curious how the air filter and the dust trap looks after a sand storm.

Falco.

i did not.

what a friday the 13th!

this morning there was no diesel and the van wouldnt start! weird. perhaps it was siphoned but probably somehow i just ran out exactly when parked it. luckily there was diesel across the street.
im in kingman arizona tonight. i did not make it to vegas today becuase i am experiencing some difficulties with my wvo system. it seems to be sucking air some where or just acting like it is. runs fine on diesel but on WVO it runs but has no power. i have to use it intermittently. i changed the filter and tightened most of the lines. ill do the rest tomorrow am if it aint to cold out. it was freakin cold this morning in gallop, well below freezing. i wonder if thats got anything to do with why its acting up.

it started in the AM but this afternoon it worked fine again for a little while.

we stopped in flagstaff today to get some free WVO compliments of alan! ed from the nature conservancy in flagstaff hooked me up with the alan, a biodiesel brewer, when he saw my most in a san francisco wvo list serve. i got enough to get to the coast! thanks alan... http://www.azconservation.org/

when we left flagstaff the wvo system started acting up again!

diesel has been anywhere from $2.04 to $2.79 a gallon.
