Re: Clouds of smoke...

Oh boy. Up to 5 grand vs 1 grand. Glad that's an option for you. That's how I got my rig cause the previous owner didn't think the van was worth that kind of investment.

Re: Clouds of smoke...

Once it blew, it really let go with clouds of smoke. But I bought the van knowing the it needed a new head -the owner told me about it -but for several weeks everything seemed okay. I don't know how he knew, unless it had blown grey smoke for him in the past. It wasn't losing coolant. I thought mayb...

Re: Testing L300 head

As far as compression tests go, just google diesel compression readings and you should get a ballpark. Problem with these heads is when they go hey often go intermittently as they start with just a tiny crack that seems to open and close. I knew my van needed a new head and yet drove around more tha...

Re: Clouds of smoke...

Re: Smashed up my Delica in Vancouver, not covered by ICBC..

You sound really stuck. A prts van isn't worth much unless you are willing to spend the time and cash to part it out. Doesn't sound like it needs much, but again you need cash to replace at minimum the door, windscreen and headlight, all available from a wrecker. Probably less than $500 and a day's ...

Re: I'll be famous

Nope. I haven't read anything that suggests power can be increased without compromising the engine. I just take it slow when I have to. most of the time I don't even notice, and usually have no trouble keeping up with US hwy traffic. That shot is near Coos Bay, Oregon, near the Sand Dunes recreation...

Re: Alternator?

Personally I rely on the sphincter inclinometer. At 15 PSI of sphincter compression on a slope, I back off. Hasn't failed me yet :-D

Re: I'll be famous

You don't notice it effecting the balance - these things are front heavy anyway. But you do notice the weight of the load. Camper interior, rooftop tent, and a load of equipment and veg oil in the back makes the poor little engine work pretty hard.

I'll be famous

Looks like Peter Cheney from the Globe and Mail Drive section will be including my rig in his "Spotted" column. I'll post the link when it shows up.

Re: Alternator?

Very true; that thing is a gimmick and nothing more. Anyone calibrate it for a rollover :) Turns out a bad connection among the fusible links. Pulled the battery and recharged it, after re-installing got 12 v with engine running. Buggered with my fusible link connections and suddenly had 14v again. ...

Re: Alternator?

Recently, but that won't stop the alternator from providing system juice while engine running. It isn't a function of battery not charging, but no charging voltage.

Alternator?

I'll have to go out with a meter cause I noticed my lights getting awfully dim on the way home, and after I arrived she wouldn't turn over again. What irks me though, is there hasn't been a charge light. Is this typical? It comes on in the "on" key position. Is it just there to give a guy ...

Re: Wet feet

I've had the leaks from the front welds, but also could see a water line along the inside of the "a" pillar. I tried to stop that one by liberally sealing the windshield, to no affect. Further search revealed a rust bubble on the roof that was letting water in and running along the roof to...

Re: My new novel

Thanks everyone. What's strange though is the Winnipeg Library isn't carrying it, and the story is part of Manitoba History. I wanted to suggest they bring it in, but only card-carrying locals can make such a suggestion. So we can read about this history here in Victoria BC, but not folks in Winnipe...
