In my opinion it Looks like casting porosity during manufacturing to me.
Typically not an issue except thats a sealing surface.

Hi Al,
I had my alternator rebuilt at warrens on sexsmith road kelowna.they did a great job at a decent price.Two years later and not a problem!
If you need an alternator while they rebuild yours I think I have a old spare you can borrow....

My starter was intermittently not working a while back....
The culprit was dirt and oil cramed in a loose spade connector on the starter.Single control wire to the solonoid.Cleaned it and crimped the connector a bit and problem went away.....

A few days ago after removing the cylinder head I added about a half inch of oil in each cylinder on top of piston.Last night I checked and in one cylinder the oil was gone!The other three the oil is at the exact same level. Now i am back to thinking it is the piston rings. :-( Tonight i am thinking...

A while ago My Fuel shut off valve stopped working I was in a pinch so I removed the plunger from the valve and installed back into the inj pump....worked great only problem was I could not shut it off!The first thing I tried was pulling off the air intake duct and covered it with my palm... It did run away once all ready!
I had to quickly pop the clutch and stall it.
Your right it was scary!

My poor L300 has been having an increasingly difficult time starting and when it finally does its blowing out smoke like crazy! :o When I pulled the intake hose off it was full of oil.I was suspecting its been pulling oil from the pcv hose on the top of the valve cover. To me it seems like too much ...
