Post by Breadman »

has anyone upgraded their stereo yet? i am thinking of putting speakers in the door and perhaps a sub in the back. i installed a cd player and replaced the stock 4 speakers already. just wondered what size door speakers would fit.

I posted a basic how to on putting 6x9s to replace the rear speakers. Basically you just elongate the original plastic mesh slots with a hacksaw blade, and then cut a bit of metal on the inside. You will need to modify the bracket a bit or make your own. The sound difference is dramatic. The front speakers are really too small to get good sound out of them, but no suggestions yet...
I bought a cheap cd player with a MP3 player jack and now have 10+ hours of listening pleasure without the hassle of a big cd changer (that was originally installed)
I also have a 300 watt Carver amp hooked into the whole works

Kickin' system.... need new alternator?

Post by Neal »

I just ordered a '92 delica exceed. Excited! it should be here in a few weeks. I would like to put a good sound system in my delica. The works, New deck, amp, sub and replace all the old speakers. Will a new stereo system work off the alternator that comes stalk in the van? or do i need to replace/upgrade the alternator/battery to get sufficient power for a big sound system?
keep the rubber side down!

Congrats on getting a Delica! I'm a fan, missed the Canadian Cup in Fernie by two days but hope to be there again for the Rat race in May.

Delica's come with two different alternators, I think its 75 amp and 90 amp versions. If yours has the two battery setup it's quite likely that your van has the 90 amp alternator, which would provide enough power for all but the highest powered amps. Most come with original stereos or upgraded stereo's that only tune in the Japanese FM band, which's a shorter band that doesn't sync with our FM lineup. Everybody will upgrade the deck at least.

i replaced the rear speakers and the front as well as a 10" sub in an enclosure right behind the drivers seat with the amp mounted on the side of the sub box. sounds great and pounds the drivers seat really well. the newer delicas have speakers mounted above the rear window which look really small but i'm sure would be great additional tweeters.

You can buy relatively inexpensive band width modifier doo dads which plug in inline with your antenna and require a 12v source. Check ebay

A couple questions; Which one did you get?, how much? please let me know if you upgrade and wish to recoup your cost for it.

I've a rather swanky kenwood tuner/cd deck in mine and really would like to keep it.

i can't quite remember which one it was, just bought it off ebay. basic tiny little black rectangle box with antenne input and output as well as 12v power. i just connected to the box in behind the glove for power, slipped the wire into something that looked like power and voila. i have given mine away to another rhd toyota hilux driver here on the island. he uses it at it works great. the only thing to keep in mind is that the numbers ie radio stations on your deck don't change, you have to remember how many hz to add to give you the equivalent canadian frequency.
hope that helps

Mine has a USB socket.

Post by delicanuck »

Hi Gang,
I stuck a new radio in my car a few months ago. It has all the usual bells and whistles plus a socket for a USB thumdrive. That's my favourite feature. I can copy a few hundred tunes from a playlist on my jukebox to a thumbdrive in about a minute or so and I'm set for a few hours of commercial/skip free listening. I can also plug in any MP3 Player. Those thumb drives are getting pretty cheap and they're very easy to pack. I think most manufacturers offer this now. Give it some thought.
