Stuck with diesel in the states... any ideas?

I think it might be the turbo? Haven't heard that thing for a while... is this likely?
L300s seem underpowered as it is so it would probably have an effect like this?

But the test shows its not the oil/fuel system up to the IP... and the in-line pump isn't solving the problem. I had all the hoses and preventitive maintenence done at Coombs in the fall, it was looking grand in the engine bay.
Your turbo has no electronic parts, it is all mechanical. No intercooler on yours (see video).

Here is a video discussing how a turbo works:

This video won't help you right now. But, upping your knowledge of how a turbo works will really help you out down the road when troubleshooting. First key to figuring out what is wrong is knowing what things are supposed to be doing when they go right! :)

Yeah its a fair bit of oil... but none is leaking to the ground, its just low viscosity and thats why im thinking about switching back to 15-40 asap... good idea? It is summer time nearly!

There is lots of grey and black smoke coming from the exhaust. I still think its the turbo. Could it be the transmission though?

The in line pump is definitely helping get me back to BC! Managed a solid 90km/hr this morning (With a strong tailwind! 8-) )

The air filter looked immaculate and I tightened the top on the fuel filter pump and the nut on the lookers right side... maybe helped a little.

Oh well. At least if its the turbo ill have the fastest delica in the west when I get a replacement or rebuild! Any sweet aftermarket options if it is the turbo?

Im gonna push for the last 3 hours to Canada then spend some more time diagnosing this situation and see what my favourite backyard mechanic buddy is up to...

You guys are awesome!

I can see your turbo being a problem with black or grey smoke; meaning you are getting too much fuel or not enough air. That would suggest the turbo.

However, you mentioned before that you had to manually pump the fuel and then add in an inline fuel filter to keep your Deli running. If this is the case, I can't see it being the turbo alone.

Could be that the turbo failed completely and you are running on normal air pressure alone? That would create a lot of black smoke and a loss of power. Still though, I don't see why you would need to add in an inline fuel pump if that were the case as you would be getting too much fuel relative to the air amount if the turbo was broken and not need help in pumping the fuel.

Could be two things went wrong at once? But my guess is that it is something other than the turbo, unless the turbo also went at the same time.
(You might not hear the turbo because of the lack of fuel and low RPM's not being able to spin it up to speed).

So I made it to Rossland and Ive been driving round this morning, just short distances... and I can hear the turbo again! Weird! Its soo responsive now. No idea what I changed. Maybe because the diesel tank is full. Thats all I can think of. Its fine now with no inline pump too. The turbo just kicks in as its supposed to.

The real test will be higher speeds and running on the WVO again.

Gonna put a bed and storage in this afternoon! Ripped all the seats out but one captains chair out. Time to get ready to live in this thing for the Summer 8-)

Will keep you guys updated when the next development happens. This is so weird. Maybe its because I left the in line pump on for 5 minutes with the engine off and now suddenly the turbo has enough fuel to work? Ill give it a proper test later anyhow.

Maybe shes just happy to be back in BC... I know I am

Same problem still happening... but now theres a sweet bed and storage in the back!

It runs well if you run the in line pump for a little bit before switching the engine on.

Higher speeds though... same problem... then when switching over to WVO its slow again...

Im gonna talk to CCA...

Also im gonna try using this Sea foam motor treatment stuff... load up the fuel filter with half a can and see if it works any magic.

Then its off to Vancouver extremely slowly!

How is the quality on your WVO, and, are you sure it is properly warmed before you start driving?

Yeah the WVO is tried and tested... I bought some in Bozeman and got some from a good source in Rossland. 5 microns, centrifuge, into my heated aluminum tank then through a vegtherm...

The Sea spray stuff didnt seem to do much... gonna try get on my way to vancouver tonight. Check the fuel filter, looked good (new in november).

Anyways, I guess ill see how far up island I get this weekend then get to coombs.

Still not sure whats up...

NO WORRIES GUYS!

The problem no longer exists.

In a blink of the eye, the dream is no longer!

This happened in Princeton at 630am. Just on my way to the gas station for a coffee and some breakfast when I got a little sleepy.

SO HAPPY TO BE ALIVE!

Thanks for all the help though. Im gonna get a new one as soon as possible and salvage whatever I can, put all the same stuff in it. Everything I owned was in my Delica. Couldnt have happened at a worse time. But it doesn't matter because im unscathed and feeling great.
