WVO conversion & filtration

Let me lay it all on the table. I'm planning to pick up a trailer at the end of my trip, then have my vehicle repaired, convert the vehicle to run WVO, rent a storage unit and fill the storage unit with a filtration system followed by a motorcycle. I'm in a hurry and don't have much money which isn't a great combination but I'm still willing to spend the extra money to have the conversion and WVO system set up for me so it's a "plug and play" type situation. That said I have many questions.

1) How much can I expect to spend on the conversion and where can I take it to have it installed and to supply the parts?

2) How much can I expect to spend on a ready to use filtration system and where could I find one?

3) How large is a filtration system, how big of a storage unit would I need?

4) Does anyone know of a good dealership that sells motorcycles that are a couple years old with warranties?

PS: if any do-it-yourselfers plan on offering their services I'm willing consider however the WVO conversions and filtration plant will be tax write-off's so in the long run I will essentially be saving around 20% if I buy something with a receipt.

Why don't you drop by my place and have a look, chat about it... It'd be way easier than trying to explain it here. If others are curious feel free to join Nick and come by for an intro, demo on the filtration system. There's lots of options, some cost more than others and some are bulkier, etc... I've experimented on a few systems and now use cold up flow, it's been awesome.

As for converting it depends of your budget and time you're ready to put in... Again, let's just catch up at some point?

That would be great! I was hearing numbers around $1000 to convert but I don't recall if that was to do yourself or not. For the sake of being conservative I will assume that I do no work myself.

Meeting with Mr. D will be most helpful.

I just wanted to comment on your $1000 cost, that is for parts only on your van only. Your WVO tank is the biggest cost. I did a custom 200 lt. stainless steel one for my l400, cost over a $1000 just for the tank. If you do no work to install, add $500+ to that figure. Get to know your local recycler for plastic containers, I haven't had to buy one yet. I also drive by the local plumbing shops garabage bin when ever I have a chance to scavange parts. Got lucky one day and scored an 80 gal. hot water tank with no leaks! Finding a source is also critical.

As mentioned earlier, there are many options. I read MANY forums on WVO before I converted. frybrid.com, plantdrive, greasecar, and delica.ca. You are lucky to have Mr. D to go to. I have given many tours here in MB already.

Thanks for the numbers. If I could get the parts and installation for $1500 I'd be happy. I'll keep an eye out for tanks as well. Also, it seems you could save money on the expensive electric pump if you do the pumping by hand no?

Great idea. I saw a thread somewhere about lined tanks that fit where the spare tire usually goes. Any idea where those were purchased from or if they were custom?

I have been thinking of converting over, currently I am now just doing the one tank thing. I filter and centrifuge my own oil but production/pickup has been slowed as I may be moving shortly.

I do have some parts that I was thinking of selling. Namely a plastic oil tank with a hotfox oil pickup and a heated filter base. I would be interested in seeing the upflow system Delicat as I could maybe incorporate a form of it in my system.

Ok, I'm reviving this thread because I was discussing this with Delicioso. From what I understand plant drive has all the parts, they have someone willing to install and can provide a receipt for tax purposes!? It doesn't sound like they provide external tanks for L300's though. I'm looking to place an aluminum tank where the spare tire is. Are any drawings floating around? Better yet, any premade ones for sale? How much do they run, any recommendations foe places to have them made, do they need to be lined?

Why not consider using the existing tanks for WVO, and a adding a smaller diesel tank somewhere? If your oil supply runs out, or you undertake a huge trip like your on again, just put diesel into your WVO tanks and switch off the vegetherm.

If you have a constant WVO supply you will use very little diesel, 20 L could last you 6 plus months easily. Flybc forum, and other fishing sites, always have a few marine gas tanks available for sale used. Strapped in place of the spare tire securely, with a decent filler system, could be a possible solution. Heck in the starting days I test fitted a 6 gallon marine tank into the spare tire holder, only to see the fit and never used this for fueling.

That sounds like a good plan to me. I'd need to find someone to do the rest of the install and supply a receipt though.

carefull how much you dig into the tax writeoff for the WVO conversion and system setup, may end up causing a red flag and getting audited for road tax on the fuel.

If I advertise a company as environmentally friendly because the work vehicle is run on WVO I'm assuming I'll have to be completely transparent about how much WVO I'm using for business. How do I go about paying tax on the fuel itself?
