Can't resell for a year!

Post by biggoolies »

I have noticed that if you personally import a vehicle, you can not resell it for a year. Is this true?

Hi Biggoolies, and welcome to the forum!

I'm wondering if perhaps you may be referring to rules governing newer model vehicles purchased in the US (under 15 years) and entering Canada as personal vehicles.

I've personally imported two vehicles from Japan over the past 5 years, and have never encountered such a restriction. There is a Canadian "Motor Dealer's Act" which limits the number of personal vehicles a private individual can sell without being registered as a motor dealer (5 within any given twelve-month period). However, as far as I'm aware there is nothing restricting you from selling a vehicle the same afternoon it comes off the boat...

:D
