Ah, and that is why we need mods. I don't think it was a bot persay, but actually a real person who is paid pennies to spam forums. There are forum spam mills in lots of poor countries. So thanks for the nuking.

Not sure how good the Engrish is in Faisalabad, most of these guys are probably great guys in real life. One guy from Chennai came in and spammed, I gave him a four second burst into the port wing and scored a point. The next day he was back but in his avatar he listed his location as Chennai and his vehicle as L300 and hasn't spammed the site. I think that is cool. Some of the contributions from over seas, as well ~ help to enrich the collective knowledge ~ all with different perspectives.

One cool thing about this job is it takes me on a virtual journey around the world. Neat to look into the news of the place the spammer's IP takes me.

Buy four vehicles, three for the angle crash tests and the fourth one for use. I wonder if the DOT had the three crash tests, would the Delica make it onto the list of importable vehicles to the USA.

there is a slight chance for me to become an expat in Houston / Texas / USA for the next three years
Question now is if I can take my Delica with me or not. Mine is a panel van from 2001, so younger than 25 years!
So far I found out that I can bring it easy for maximum 12 month on german registration as a "tourist". Maximum 12 month.
If I stay longer than that I have to register it in Texas...and than all the sh... comes along with EPA, DOT import taxes etc...so far no option from my perspective.

My thoughs are now that after 12 month I will do a journey to Mexico and export the Delica to Mexico and than return after a few days and importing it back to the U.S. for the next 12 month...

Any thoughs or comments on that?

The import law for one year is exactly one year - you are not able to renew it. They won't let you bring it back in from Mexico unfortunately.

Does anyone know how to find the Manufactured date for a Delica? They base the 25 year rule on manufactured date rather than model year. I had one guy look at the metal plate on the driver door jamb but that didnt show it, and I guess BC doesn't have titles for these cars?

Washingtonian here, letting anyone who's interested know my import story. Maybe it will help get more Delicas more love here in the states.

I've been looking for a Delica for a long time but found the magical 25 year old rule pretty quickly so I had to wait. Finally the 1990 models were old enough and I started making lots of calls to private sellers in BC via craigslist. I quickly found the dealerships increase the price on the US eligible imports more than most dealerships increase prices so I figured getting a hold of a private seller was the way to go. I finally found a seller who was willing to wait a few days for me to figure out how to get to BC with a friend. I had filled out all the border crossing paperwork I could find (which I won't mention since it was unless) and called my bank to make sure I could withdraw enough CAD once I got to Canada. Unfortunately the Canadian banks had a $1,500 cash withdraw limit and most of them wouldn't even allow me to withdraw any cash without an account. After 4 banks I had $3,000 CAD and it was time to meet with the seller. Luckily she was nice enough to let me mail her a check for the remaining amount which ended up being a hassle since I wrote the check for USD but the exchange rate was different so I shorted her $20 unintentionally. I'll buy her a beer next time I'm in BC. After that the border crossing was a breeze. They didn't want any of the forms I had filled out prior and they just gave me new ones. The import fee was relatively inexpensive and I happily drove my new deli all the way home to Port Townsend.

My import lesson - get the cash before you enter Canada, even if that means telling a white lie to the Canadian border patrol about how much cash you have with you.

How much was the import fee? Also, I don't think the border guards care about amounts under $10,000.

Hopefully your 25 year old Deli isn't more than $10,000.

I believe the import fee was 2 or 3% of the "stated" purchase price. You and the seller can "state" the "price" you "settled" on and then put it on the paperwork.
