Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
Too any one undecided about joining for the last minute - Snow creek is a beautiful spot and there'll be plenty of sites available even today. The northern site has a closed gate that's unlocked, though many small trees down around some sites. We skidded a small alder out of our campsite with our tow strap; you can see 1/3 of it just to the right of the first picture. The road to Port Alberni is in fantastic shape, taking us just 30 minutes from Snow creek to the marina in front of Port A. Tis a nice smooth'n'wide dirt highway, be careful on the narrow sections as there is active logging in the area! Tend to drive well maintained log roads like that a wee bit fast myself. Never did check the south route, but Brian said the wash out should be Delica passable; for a Main beach day trip.
Wish we could have stayed, came home yesterday. Awesome spot, great to meet Kathy Brian Seiko & Tundra (Brian and Seiko) and Delicat (David and Heidi). Oh and what the weather will be like there; heard from several people that south Sproat will be 5, or more, degrees warmer then the rest of the Island. Mmmmm, crystal clear waters, cooling stream, plenty of shade, Brian's nice boat, sounds the a perfect long weekend spot!
Cheers

Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
You guys suck. I'm stuck at home in Central Ontario watching the network for problems, its pouring rain outside, really bucketing it down, about 10*C, the blackflies are out in full force, and now I'm being tortured by beautiful pictures of the Island and Delis.
More seriously, I hope you all have a fantastic Holiday weekend!!!
All the best,
George

Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
What a totally awesome weekend!!!! It was so cool to put faces to names to vehicles, the sun was shining (except for Monday packing up, of course!), good food, good company, a beer or two (honest, occifer!). In spite of the yahoo drunken twenty-somethings that took over the beach, it was a great time.
I think the count was 11 delis in all, which was a pretty awesome turnout considering we were more than a little off the beaten track.
I understand that some photos were snapped, but not by me unfortunately, I didn't even remember to get my camera out. Our friend Mars (former homestay kid) went four-bying with the gang and had an excellent time, thanks David. All of us at the campsite were getting concerned when they'd been gone 4+ hours, but apparently they went to Port Alberni and had fish and chips.
Lots of fun and stories, and don't forget rice crispy squares and brownies, around the campfire on Saturday night. Just to show my appreciation, I'm working on changing our name on the forum to something shorter (okay Tardis? ). We were truly blessed this weekend with good company, nice weather, and an amazing exchange of information. Glen got his ear bent by each of us at some point, and he was very patient, in spite of it being his vacation too (like he gets a vacation from Deli-land - what a joke!)
Anyhow, looking forward to seeing the pics, and thanks to everyone who showed up - it was a gas (or should I say a diesel???)
(formerly Kathy Brian Seiko & Tundra - okay Tardis - is that easier??)

Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
Well, as I had indicated earlier, it was a bit of trek to get to the site (especially with the StarCraft in tow), but other than the wahoos at the beach/boat launch - it was an awesome time! Yes, we probably talked 'shop' a little more than Glen might have wanted, but he was most gracious. And yes, he parked his Grey Ghost right next to the Moon Machine.
Anyhow, enough mugging, here are some pictures: It was good to meet everyone from the mainland - didn't think that many would willingly subject themselves to a ferry raping! Would have been cool to go out to Tofino with a couple of you, but I had to set up camp (also a good thing I didn't go with the wanderers either or Lucienne would have been frantically standing there a long time waiting for my return). It was fun to go through the 'ditch', although Glen and I figured it was probably more tame when we went through than before TardisDeli mended the one side - still fun to get the wheels wet with something other than rain water.
Will have to do something like this again, maybe in behind Sooke or Jordan River. Thank you to Kathy and Brian for setting this up. Look forward to the next one.

Latest news:
"Grizzly bear sighting confirmed on Island
Times Colonist
Published: Wednesday, May 21, 2008
A weekend sighting of a grizzly bear on northern Vancouver Island has
wildlife officials concluding the large carnivores have migrated from
the mainland and are likely here to stay.
For years, Vancouver Island residents took comfort from the fact that
the province's grizzly population, now numbering 17,000, were
exclusive to the mainland.
But conservation officers are suggesting that's changing.
On Sunday, a man spotted a grizzly bear near Woss, northwest of
Campbell River. He got out of his vehicle to take a photograph, and
the bear charged. He ran back to his vehicle.
Conservation officers checked the tracks and confirmed the bear was a
grizzly, CHEK NEWS reported.
"Whether or not this population will become established ... if it's
part of a natural distribution, then it's going to occur whether we
like it or not," said conservation officer Kim Brunt.
This was the third confirmed sighting of a grizzly bear on the Island
since 2003, when a grizzly was shot and killed near Port Hardy."
Okay, which one of you dressed up as a bear?

Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
I'm just glad we didn't come across that grizzly while camping!
The closest we got was on our Monday when we left the campsite, myself and the Tardis followed a big black bear (my guess would be close to 350-400lbs) on the road leading to the campsite, actually just a few km from the site... For all of you that ended up tenting, good that bear wasn't too curious!

Re: Deli Camp - May Long Weekend?
Funny... there was a bear in my neighbour's yard when I got home on Monday. Didn't see any on the camping trip though?
Great trip by the way! Thanks go to Kathy and Brian for hosting, Tardisdeli for the baked goods and Electric Jester for the tips on how to best zombie proof a deli.
