2.8 TD major oil problem
Hi there, so recently I have been noticing oil all over my engine bay and it is difficult to tell where it is coming from. At first I believed it to be the valve cover gasket. After later finding out that wasn't the problem I realized that the oil exploded all over the place from the intercooler! The most common problem related to this was a bad pcv valve which would let oil into the intake then turbo and into the intercooler and intake manifold. So today I spent all day cleaning up the valve and left the bypass pipe loose in a bottle to see if it was leaking. The result? nothing at all, but after cleaning up all day I found a huge oily mess all over the engine again, from the intercooler. As far as I know there is only one more source of oil which could be supplied to the intercooler...the turbo? anybody have this problem? I am almost having a case of a runaway diesel because the engine is running on its own oil supply

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
Make sure it is not feeding oil back into the intake...you do not have a run away yet...
Sign of a run away motor...RPM climbs to some value beyond redline....you cannot stop it....runs until it throws a rod, seizes....you cannot stop it unless it is standard or you have a CO2 extinguisher or a wood block to shove in intake...
I would disconnect the intercooler and run it and see if the turbo is blowing oil....turbo rebuild maybe....

Try replacing your oil cap, I know mine failed and made a similar mess.

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
I know I haven't had a runaway yet, but this is the kind of thing that leads to it and is just waiting to happen. I cleaned the PCV, left the breather in a bottle and went for a drive, when I came back there was nothing in it. But this was just after cleaning all the hoses it was completely soaked in oil within a 10 minute drive. The only other source of oil down the intercooler piping was the turbo. Well guess its time to replace the seals

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
Just thinking of your issue. The only other sources that could be leaking before having to yank the turbo and pay big dollars for this to be repaired: (some of them you most likely checked and I assume you have pulled the timing cover and checked the seals on the front of the engine.)
1) Valve Cover Gasket can be nasty bad place for leaks
2) If you have an oil intercooler the hoses could be "blocked off" with hose clamps or vice grips with tape protection and see if there are problems
3) Check the oil feeder tube to the Turbo to see if the Banjo fitting is good and the outlet fitting to the sump is good. (Feeder tube on 4d56 is near the top of the head). This is a higher pressure oil feed and can be known to cause issues.
4) Very remote chance but one of the balance shaft removal bolts on the side of the engine came loose and is leaking (particularly on the oil-pump side).
5) (Happened to me) oil filter shook a little bit loose or oil pressure switch bolt is loose

Check your oil filter.
The idiots at Walmart changed my oil filter, but left the old seal stuck to the block, and put the new filter on.
After a few months, the "double seal" let go, and it sprayed oil everywhere. I could not find out where it was coming from. I thought it was the turbo.
When I had it serviced it was found to be the oil filter.

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
I will check everything oil related but the oil sprayed all over the other side of the engine bay, no where near the oil filter or turbo itself. It appeared to be dripping and spraying form the middle of the intercooler and the only oil source near that section is the turbo where it has been lagging power recentlyjrrodger wrote:Just thinking of your issue. This is what I first thought, but isn't leaking at all
2) If you have an oil intercooler the hoses could be "blocked off" with hose clamps or vice grips with tape protection and see if there are problems
I took the intercooler off twice and there are no oil lines of any kind attached to it

I will check that soon enough

Again, try replacing the oil cap.
It can make a mess if it doesn't hold a seal. Its only like 15 bucks to find out.

X2 I had oil spraying everywhere from a bad seal on my cap.pajerry wrote:Again, try replacing the oil cap.

Or you can slip an O ring under the existing seal of your current cap, which is what I did a year or so ago. Works like a charm but make sure it's a sizeable ring to support the existing seal.pajerry wrote:Again, try replacing the oil cap.

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
Just thought of another idea as it is on the other side of the motor.
Check the dipstick tube entry to the SUMP. This has been known to spay as well. You pull the dipstick tube and put gasket sealer on the outside plug part of the dipstick tube. (The Gasket sealer you choose has to be compatible with Oil and heat I think it is the Grey type)
Also I did not mean the turbo intercoooler on top of the engine, but some models have an oil intercooler that is facing forward on the engine next to the Radiator.

Re: 2.8 TD major oil problem
Turbo oil return line. If you have oil all over your filter but when you look up top it looks clean around the valve cover and still can't tell where its from...chances are its the return oil gasket. Not a big deal.. just make sure your levels are good till you can properly replace the gasket. Its tricky to get at so best to just have someone do it for you. I re did mine a bunch of times and the gasket material was wrong etc. Finally cvi did it and it held.. although it did just go again. Bugger.

2.8 TD major oil problem
Didn't see all the replies, I'm rebuilding the turbo myself right now, its already apart, found oil all over compressor side of turbo. Remember I did mention that the oil was coming from the intercooler pipes and that the mess is on the top of the engine towards the front, no oil around the oil return line or the oil filter. There may be a remote possibility of it being the oil cap only because of where all the oil is. Also lastly I though it was the valve cover untill I cleaned it all up and the oil was all over the place except the cover haha. Anyways I will have the turbo back in tomorrow
