Sorry, I should have asked only one question!
Is that "nope" - no valve, or "nope" - can't answer that?
I'm stumped

there is no actual valve on the 4d56 engine.redmond wrote:Sorry, I should have asked only one question!

although there is a hose from the valve cover back to the air intake hose (before the turbo). this is just to recycle ugly fumes for the environment.

Re: I'm stumped
So i put in EGT gauge finally. wasn't too bad, just don't F'up the pipe thread tap (I was close). in doing this job I found out the my turbo is missing the metal strap that holds the input and output sides of the turbo together nice and tight. see the attached picture, it goes from left to right: EGT probe, bolt, exhaust turbine housing, MISSING STRAP ON THE FLANGES, oil input, intake turbine housing.
The question i have is.
1 - Can this missing strap cause any harm to my turbo? it may have been missing for almost 2 years, because I remember undoing it and putting it back on almost 2 years ago. There is a heat shield that holds them together (kindof), and there is no play in the turbo shaft (hand feel only). turbo still pumps 10 psi.
Obviously I will be buying a new one, just curious of any effects...

Re: I'm stumped
If you can see evidence of soot coming out between the flanges this could be affecting your spool up time, but if no soot is visible it wasn't leaking. If it's held in there tight you most likely have not damaged your turbo, but get a clamp on there ASAP.

Re: I'm stumped
there was soot on the bottom of the heat shield, but not much. I consider myself very lucky. for the last year i've had 30km of dirt road daily. It could have easily rattled the turbo far enough apart to explode!!Mephisto wrote:If you can see evidence of soot coming out between the flanges this could be affecting your spool up time, but if no soot is visible it wasn't leaking.
