JDM Import Ltd. - sells with no DOT headlights

Post by daviddelica »

Hello to all Delica enthusiasts.

I have been looking for Delica L300 for a while within 8k budget, and dealership JDM Import Ltd. was selling really nice unit with crystal light roof(gas though). I test-drove it, liked it, we agreed on price and I bought it. Everything was good, sales guy was very polite and knowledgeable but... so bad I did not read this forum before.

One day police guy pulled my car over and checked the headlights. It was in Victoria. He said there are no DOT mark on it and there are no chances it has passed safety inception. I showed him all the papers but anyway he said I must do re-inspection and advised to go to Canadian tire. I failed it and had to find DOT headlights. The sales guy from the dealership was not able to help me, because everything was ok "legally". I spent extra $850 for the headlights and $400 to install it and $150 for re-inspection. As a result, extra expenses was $1400. I am really disappointed by that and want to warn future buyers to double check if this dealership provide Delicas with DOT headlights.

I am also curious how he passed inspection...

Honestly, I have yet to see a Delica with "DOT" markings on the headlamps. I'm sure there must be one out there somewhere, I just haven't found one. I have, however, seen many with the correct E codes. Canada recognises E codes, so long as they are from countries that drive on the same side of the road as Canada. Mine are "E4", which is the Netherlands. There is a list of E codes in this thread, called "Understanding E Codes" and can be found in the Delica FAQ Section, check it out and compare with the E codes on your headlamps. There was a COP in Manitoba that was harassing a couple of members there, maybe he got transferred to Victoria. If he stops you again tell him this and point out that if he is pulling you over for E codes then he must also pull over Mercedes, Porsches, Bimmers, Audis... that would make him popular.

Knowledge is power, know your rights.

I'm curious about where you found right-hand traffic DOT marked headlamps. Please share, there are a number of L300 Delicas going to the US now and they're going to need a source of DOT headlamps.

Canadian Tire advised to change the headlights with DOT or E-code as mentioned above. However, the Delica I bought was without DOT or EVEN E-mark.
L400 first generation goes without these marks.

I ordered E-code headlight from the Vancouver parts supplier Rocky Mountains.
