Air Sound

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Air Sound

Post by insideout »

This is in a L400 delica, but I think it is equally as possible in a L300

I was driving to Horseshoe bay over the weekend and at some point I heard one or two large rushes of air from the Delica. WHOOOOOSH WHOOOOOOSH
I panicked and pulled over, thinking I lost air from my tire. It was fine. Checked under the hood and didn't see any loose hoses anywhere

Nothing seemed to change about driving/running/performance, so I continued on. It hasn't happened since

Any idea what this was?

Also, when I am driving down a steep hill, how can I use the engine to slow myself down? "D" is too fast, "2" is too low. Would turning O/D off help me?

Sounds like the turbo did an air dump through the wastegate valve. Which is what they do when boost pressure gets a tad high.

And about slowing down without brakes.....its an automatic so you can't get a engine brake effect like you can with a manual transmission. Dropping into 2nd gear in an auto is a bit risky because there is a chance of going into first or worse reverse/park. Not a good prospect.

I do this so much I'm worried about wearing the switch out (not really).
Anytime I have excess speed, even when a light turns yellow, I use it, with or without brakes...

Excellent to know you do this with success. I will start doing this as well and see how it effects my braking down hill

I use the o/d button on my L300 quite often. I judge use by my RPM. Turning off the o/d raises the RPM around 300-400. So I don't use it if I'm close to redline. Running down hills I turn it off (o/d) before my speed picks up. I use that to maintain downhill speed.

Also, if you can read your manual they list max speeds for your lower gears.
